The problem is fathers weren't always noted as deceased even if they were but if Ann says married in 1901 that is further evidence he was still alive.

I wonder is there a death for little William Charles?  He would only be 10 in 1891 so not likely to be out on his own.

Have you checked grandparents on 1891 census as they often had grandchildren with them.

The 1891 census has the whole family missing! which is odd, apparently though 1891 was when the Suffragette movement had a lot of women refuse to carry out the census, so potentially, James was 'under the thumb' and went along with what Ann said?

Will have a further look into the grandparents in 1891, but the Hills family are very much a brick wall.

Ann and James had a daughter- Charlotte who passed aged 1, then Eliza(my 2x gt grandmother) and a brother...

finding any of them, other than Eliza is proving a challenge.

Nope! Absolutely no clue, given the ages, potentially could be a sister of Ann's but haven't made that link yet.

Would she have shown as sister in law to the head, if this was the case?

Not necessarily no especially if she was just visiting

trying to check the birth registrations - is this right?

William Charles Dec 1880 mothers name Hardwick - Huntingdon

Charlotte Sophia Mar 1871 mothers name Hardwicke - Huntingdon

Eliza Jane Sep 1873 mothers name Hardwick - Thrapston

there are other Hills/Hardwick births but could be a different couple
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

but haven't found Eliza yet

The only other child I've found is Eliza Jane Hills(married name Reedman) born around 1873

Otherwise, yes thats the correct family

Emma Ann - Sep 1875 - Mar 1879

I'll have a look at the baptism records, will let you know if they are the same family.

It looks like Emma Ann was theirs, but Mary Louisa wasn't
