Rachel Maddocks died 12 July 1914 - Gepps Cross, South Australia
« on: Tuesday 26 August 25 16:45 BST (UK) »
This is probably a bit of a long shot but I found this death record online, registration place Adelaide, Australia.  The transcription gives an age of 95 therefore approx dob 1819, father (should this be husband) William Maddocks.

I have been unable to find the death of Rachel Maddocks b. 1821 in England. She was married to William Maddocks who died in Luton, England in 1876.  I have not been able to trace Rachel in England after the 1881 census in Luton, however, her daughter Margaret married Robert Morris in Sydney Australia in 1890.  This made me wonder if Rachel had also gone to Australia and whether this could be her death record.

I would be very grateful for any help proving this theory, or otherwise of course.

On ancestry the death is given as 12 July 1914. Unfortunately trove does not seem to be working at the moment. There is a death notice for someone at Gepps Cross on 13 July 1914, can't see the name until trove is back. From the snip it appears her son-in-law was Mr BIRCHMORE.

Working now - it's a funeral notice for Rachel MADDACKS, son-in-law Mr BIRCHMORE of Gepps Cross.

Maybe George BIRCHMORE. Does this name help you at all?

This looks corrrect. Elizabeth MADDOCKS aged 28, daughter of William and Rachel MADDOCKS married George BURCHMORE 5 Feb 1883 at Dunstable, Bedfordshire.

George (27) and Elizabeth (28)  BURCHMORE departed Plymouth 24 May 1883 and arrived Adelaide 13 August 1883 on the Romsdal.

Perfect, thank you both so much for your time and effort.

Rachel was my 3xGr Aunt and the only sibling of my 2xGr Grandfather that I hadn’t been able to find a death for, so this information will finally complete that little branch of my tree.  ;D

Thanks again.

Possible immigration record although her age is out by several years but going by her occupation on the 1881 census could be her

Mrs Maddocks age 60 ( seamstress )
Miss Maddocks age 30 there was a Miss Lilie Maddocks with her 1881 census

Departure date 17 Jan 1890 England
Destination Port Adelaide
Ship Ormuz

Thanks again Rosie.

From an online tree I think Elizabeth was known as Lilie so it is probably her on 1881 census but the Miss Maddocks on the immigration record could be Margaret.  If it is Rachel and Margaret they have both rounded down their ages by quite a bit but the timescale would fit with Margaret’s marriage in Sydney in November 1890.
