Jane Ann Sheriff
« on: Sunday 24 August 25 17:41 BST (UK) »
Sorry to be back again so soon with another query but this one is baffling me. ???

I’m researching Jane Ann Sheriff born abt 1871. This is the path I have for her:

1881 census she is with her grandparents in Bedlington; William Sheriff and Dorothy. This says Jane Ann was born in Willington.

1891 census she’s at Barrington Terrace with her grandmother as a domestic servant.

Late 1891, Jane Ann (of Barrington) has an illegitimate son named John Henry Sheriff with a man named John Christie.

1892, Jane Ann Sheriff marries John William Davidson. They have four children; Ann Elizabeth (1892), William (1894), Jane Isabella (1895) and Florence May (1897).

By 1901 John William Davidson is living in Longframlington as a widower with his daughter Florence.

However, I believe Jane Ann is living in Cowpen with a man named William Charlton. Their two children are John Henry Charlton (b. 1891, Barrington) which I assume is her illegitimate son, and a daughter Margaret (b. 1900). There is a birth registered Charlton MN Sheriff in Tynemouth. After that there’s no sign of them.

There's a possible for Margaret [as Margret] in Cowpen in 1911, as a visitor with the Robson family

have you got the family in 1871. There is a William Sherriff with wife Dorothy living in Willington, with children
Ann E, 19, b Shilbottle
Esther, 14, b Newcastle
Dorothy, 9 b Long Benton
John W 4 b Wallsend
and grandchild, Dorothy A   10 days, b Killington ?

Is Dorothy (granchild) an error and she should be Jane, or did they later change her name ?

i   SHERRIFF, JANE  ANN     -

A dash for mother's maiden name would usually indicate illegitimate. My guess she is the child og=f the 19 year old daughter

May be a red herring but there is a marriage in 1922  in Morpeth district between Annie E Davidson and John A Robson.

And you would be correct with the mother of Jane, born 24.3.1871
