The MRI entry shows he received only the British medal.  There is no entry on it indicating he served abroad

re John his service abroad was after he enlisted in Cardiff 1889 info from roots chat member Dundee
shows India- Gibraltar-south Africa-and home, before leaving Army then re enlisting for WW1.

Yes he enlisted in 1914, Carole.
Welch Regiment 1914
No 34070
R W F  - 1915
Gibraltar - 1915 - 1919

If I am reading it correctly.
His wife and children are mentioned so it is the right John.

Also -

There is a published tree which has the full record.
His father Timothy is mentioned.
He joined the Welsh Regiment in Cardiff in 1889 - number 2554.
