What was his army number & which regiment did he serve in?

The WW1 Medal Roll Index has a large number of entries for the name John Egan.  Over 60% of WW1 service records were destroyed in the WW2 blitz.

Part of his military record was posted on your other thread.
These are the two pages that mention family.  Click on each of them twice to get the largest size.

Debra  :)

There is a published tree which has the full record.
His father Timothy is mentioned.
He joined the Welsh Regiment in Cardiff in 1889 - number 2554.
He might also have served in a kings Royal Rifles prior to this as it is mentioned.

He has a couple of convictions for assault mentioned and looks to be in South Africa 1899-1900
You could look for a medal record.
He was discharged as medically unfit for service in 1901.

If he was discharged as medically unfit in 1901 - are you sure he served in WW1?  There is no MRI entry under 2554 but that was his 1901 number. He would have been given a different number if he enlisted 13yrs later

There are 3 MRI entries for that name in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers.  Without his number - how do we determine which is your John?

Yes he enlisted in 1914, Carole.
Welch Regiment 1914
No 34070
R W F  - 1915
Gibraltar - 1915 - 1919

If I am reading it correctly.
His wife and children are mentioned so it is the right John.
