When you have a couple born in the early 1800s in England, but you can’t find a burial record for either of them (and you’ve searched Ancestry, FindmyPast, and Family Search, using every spelling variant of the surname you can think of), what do you try next?

so elaborate a liitle, when & where DID you see them?
Where were they and with whom when last seen?
you say early 1800s, so  before or after civil registration?

The surname is Machell. The couple married in 1830 in Liverpool, had at least 1 son in 1831, and then they both completely disappear!?
(The man’s first name was James. He was a Bookkeeper on Leeds Street. The wife is Mary nee Rigby, born about 1808 in Liverpool. Their son is living with her brother in Liverpool in the 1841 census.)

Have you searched tha passenger lists? There are people of that name on inward passenger lists  from Canada to  the UK on Findmypast it may be worth investigating.Canadian records

Thank you for the suggestion! The Mary Machelll in Canada was a Yorkshire Machell, married to Richard Machell.

If they both died pre 1837 - not all burial records have been transcribed

Their son is living with her brother in Liverpool in the 1841 census.)

A census is a snapshot of one night, he could just have been staying for a few days.

Have you searched the records of the church the son was baptised at for burials.

Who was the informant on his uncles death certificate

I have the Rigby side but not the Machell I'm afraid.
In 1841 Thomas Machell is living with his aunt and uncle George and Sarah  at 7  Barston Lane Walton on the Hill

Thomas Machell 10 y

George Moulton Rigby died Dec 1841 West Derby and Sarah remarries 2.10.1843 at St Martins in the Fields to Chares Phineas Shore cabinet maker s of William Abraham Shore.
She is the daughter of Peter Hignet plumber and glazier a widow.
That leads to the first marriage 21.9.1834 at St Annes's
George Moulton Rigby watchmaker and Sarah Hignett ,both can write their signatures. Witnesses Peter Hignett and William and Ellen Rigby . 3/4 of their parents.

William Rigby married Ellen Smith 15.11.1801 St Anne's again both sign. William is a brazier. Witnesses Elizabeth Sadler and Jarvis Smith.

It looks like William was buried St Nicholas  1790-4.7.1823 Bannister St perhaps
Maybe Ellen 24.8.1842 St Mary's Cemetery age 64  from Workhouse.
I can't see an obvious death for James or Mary but I would assume one or both had died by 1841.

There is a possible marriage St Anthony 9.5.1838

Elizabeth Keogh spinster Parnell ? Square d of James.
It could be him
