Papple / Murray Family
« on: Sunday 17 August 25 05:01 BST (UK) »
I have being trying very unsuccessfully to find information regarding my Great Grandmother Margaret Murray. I know that she married James Papple 1813- 1883 in Glasgow in 1843. He was a tailor and that they lived in Glasgow. James came from Kirkcudbrightshire and I think both of his wives also came from there. This was James second marriage (his 1st wife was also called Margaret (Mc Taggart) unfortunately this has caused a problem in that from most of the ancestry sites people just assume they are the same person. I have found certificates for both of James's marriages but both have little detail so I can't find the birth or death of Margaret McTaggart nor can I find the birth of Margaret Murray but I do have her death certificate unfortunately this was not filled out correctly so I could find her parents names. The other issue is information from the census indicates that Margaret Murray was born in 3 different places Newton Stewart, Wigton and New Monkland. I know some of those places are near but I couldn't understand whether they were parishes of counties so then couldn't try to find birth comparisons. The only other bit of information I have is that Margaret Murray had a sister Agnes Murray that died in Glasgow in 1867 this was from a newspaper article. ( again couldn't find her birth or death). So all I have about Margaret Murray is she died in Saltcoats Ayr 1880 and was possibly born in about 1816 and married in 1843. Her and James had a son born in 1848 ( no documentation at all) Any suggestions please

I think you need to be careful believing Ancestry transcriptions of place names.
The 1851 and 1861 census has Margaret born in Newton Stewart in Wigtownshire or Galloway.
1871, I suspect should say that too, but has been mangled in the transcription
The original images of the census are available from Scotlands People.

This is 1851 census

Who does William age 13 belong to?
Was he a son that Margaret Murray brought to the marriage, who has taken on his stepfather’s surname. ??
That William is not with James Papple in 1841.
It looks like the first wife Marg McTaggart must have died between 1841 census and 1843.

Have you got Margaret Murrays actual death certificate as that may confirm its the right one as should have who she married to, if he is deceased.  If she was in Saltcoats then maybe she was living with one of her children or on holiday.

Thank you for all the helpful replies. Yes I have learnt not to believe everything on the ancestry sites . The son William from the 1851 census is a nephew and he started an apprenticeship with him. (his mother had died and believed he was shipped off to live with James. I will follow all your leads. The problem is following 3 Margaret Papple's. I can confirm from documents that James had 2 wives called Margaret McTaggart and Margaret Murray. Margaret McTaggart was mother to Margaret Papple Born 1840 and Margaret Murray was mother to James Papple born 1848. Margaret Papple 1840 lived with her father James Papple and Margaret Murray all of her life and when they retired to Saltcoats she went with them. She also ended up caring for her half brothers children when they were orphaned and they went to live with her in 1891.
