Hopefully you can get further back and have the Parish church/kirk  books to assist you.  Unlike me  -  there are no books because the last vicar took the books with him and they may, or may not, still be in existence. !!!

My ancestors included "Seaforth" in the name of their house so that was where I started my search.  The Scots followed the usual naming pattern so it's quite easy to trace further back .For instance my late father born 1912 in England,  was named Donald.  He was the youngest of five boys  and I had to go back to a Donald born 1770 on the Black Isle, Scotland the land of the McKs  before I discovered he was a gt. grandfather to my father.

<The Mackenzies of Gairloch were a branch of the Mackenzie clan who lived on the west coast of Scotland, specifically in the Gairloch area. Their lands included Flowerdale, where their family house was located. This branch of the clan was known for maintaining a strong connection to their tenants and resisting evictions during the Highland Clearances. >

Hi Rena:
I will keep on looking.
Rena is a beautiful name and the title of one of my favorite Blue Rodeo (a Canadian Americana style rock band). The song is named for lead singer, Jim Cuddy's wife Rena.
Best regards from Western NY
Chuck

-John McKenzie; b. 1791, Carlisle, Cumberland; m. Elizabeth Hodgson, 4th gr grandparents:

The 1851 census has birth place for this John McKinzie as Holme East Waver (Cumbria) abt 1794.

Possible baptisms in that area ----
1794 in Brampton   - Parents John McKenzie and Jane Elphinston
1796 in Carlisle -  Parents John McKenzie and Ann Strickland

Perhaps have a look in Wigton (just a few miles from Holme East Waver). There are some M’KINZIE marriages and baptisms there in the late 1700s.
Milligan - Jardine – Glencross – Dinwoodie - Brown: (Dumfriesshire & Kirkcudbrightshire)

Colin:
I think the email invite to ancestry does not require membership for you to view my tree. Check it out and let me know for sure.
Chuck

No access for me, you were able to access trees in the past but that seems to be no longer possible even for former members.

I note the marriage below which has been posted and it does appear to be a possibility, the only concern is the names of their children. If John 1796 was the one to marry Elizabeth Hodgson, their children were William, Charles, John?

John McKenzie. Marriage  1 September 1785
Carlisle, Cumberland, England.
Spouses Ann Strickland

Looks like Banns read on 14 August.

Children baptised Carlisle.
Edward 3 January 1796, John 8 February 1796, James 17 October 1800,
Ann 1 January 1803.

I believe this to be John & Elizabeth's son William. His children's names, make the 1785 marriage of his possible grandfather look more likely. Maybe some of the records for Williams siblings are missing?

1851 – Orton, Cumberland, all born Carlisle. No Marriage?

Charles was probably the youngest of the 3 known children, he was more than likely baptised with John & William in 1831. Perhaps other children,if there were any, did not syrvive.
