I posted that image from the Ellis Island site, I don't have a subscription but I did register years ago, unless it's changed since then.

This took me back. Found my old password and had a look at the site. No on line access to records but the records could be researched by a staff member and results e.mailed - at a cost.

The extract you posted is from the the manifest I viewed on FamilySearch.

There is only one manifest so it will be the same on both sites.

That goes without saying.

Can any conclusion be drawn from the ordering of names? Mary Redmond is listed after J,E, an infant. Would passengers have lined up and have had their names recorded while boarding? Standing in line together might suggest travelling together?

Read it again, it say JE & infant, not an infant.

thank you for the correction. sloppy typing on my part: 'an' should have been typed as 'and'. That aside, my question about boarding and entries into the ship's log remain. Is it reasonable to assume Catherine Redmond is travelling with John and Ellen? (caught another error on my part: catherine, not mary)

Wxflr and Zaphod, thank you for your comments. My German teacher in hight school, who was an old man in 1970, shared that as a young boy in Saxony, Germany, his culture put no emphasis on birthdays, only the child's Namesday. The culture of the time focused on other things such as patron saint rather one's own birthday.

I’m sorry there is nothing on the section of Manifest shown to indicate if Catherine was their servant or just someone travelling independently who just happened to be listed after them.
