Stephen joined the army and served at Waterloo.
In 1820 he went to South Africa as one of the 1820 Settlers.
Iwould really like to find his birthplace and his ancesters.

"I would really like to find his birthplace"

Your post says he was born in Harefield?  Where did you get that info from?

Hello
There is one Stephen Browne baptised at Harefield
Stephen bapt 10.2.1771 s of Susanna Brown and natural fathe John Wenman.

Susanna was a local girl daughter of Joseph and Susanna Brown bapt 18.5.1752.
Her siblings
William 5.2.1750,Elizabeth 3.8.1755,Sarah 12.11.1758 ,Joseph 19.4.1761,Mary 6.11.1763,Charlotte 26.1.1766 and Maria 22.5.1768.

Her father Joseph was bapt 16.2.1724 s  of Joseph and Elizabeth Browne. He married Susanna Sheward by licence 29.5.1750.
His sister Ann bapt 31.12.1722 married John Wenman in 21.12.1758 .(Both signed)She was buried 11.12.1775.
So it looks like susanna and John were related by marriage.

Susanna Senior or junior married John Abbott 28.4.1771 at Harefield .Unhelpfully no marriage status given.

I know Stephen's age is a bit out but perhaps he lied when he signed up and it's not miles out.

Hi
There is a PCC Will for Joseph Browne senior 14.4.1772 (burial 23.11.1771)
He is a taylor.
Mary Hooker his daughter gets the houses occupied by John Wenman baker,WilliamCarew labourer and Anne Wood spinster for life.
Then to grandson William Brown s of Joseph
Joseph gets 2 gold guinea's
Anne wife of John Wenman daughter 1 gold guinea
And rest to Mary Hooker.

So other burial for Joseph Browne 28.6.1768 must be Susanna's father.
Joseph and Elizabeth had Jesse son 29.8.1721-15.2.1721  ,Ann 1722 ,Joseph 1724 ,William 21.7.1727 and Mary 24.4.1734 who married William Hooker 7.7.1762

Elizabeth died 27.11.1755.

Not finding much on them before that but I think it's down to the lack of Harefield parish records
online.

But back to Susanna Brown who married John Abbot in 1771 .John died  16.2.1774 and Susanna remarried William Jones 30.10.1775 .
They had one son John 26.5.1776.-20.6.1776
But given that Susanna Sheward was bapt 9.2.1733 d of Thomas and Elizabeth ,it could still have been the mother rather than the daughter.
Frustrating!
