Attempted hacking - Hotmail / Outlook
« on: Sunday 10 August 25 10:54 BST (UK) »
Hi

Keep your eye out for emails informing you that Outlook is changing and urging you to click a link to secure your usage - this then asks you to 'log in' and insert your password.

It looks very plausible but the email I received was from a  'David' using a Yahoo email address.   I've changed my password.

I've had all sorts or rubbish coming through on my Hotmail and am seriously thinking of deleting it altogether which is a shame as it was my first email address.

Thanks for the notification.  Thankfully I haven't had anything excepting the famous "Hello Pervert" email quite a while ago, which I marked as spam and haven't had anything since.

Years ago I did  get enormous amounts of junk emails but at the time I was with Yahoo and that's where all the spam emails came from, which is why I changed provider.    In those  days you could read the reverse of emails and if my memory serves me right, then the junk emails came from an IT college Tampa Bay.

When my youngest son was attending uni. last century (lol)  he did mention that the computer undergraduates at that time had been enjoying themselves sending out spam.   I guess boys will be boys whatever the decade.

Dealing with links in eMails or Attachments is very easy.

Do nothing.

If I get an eMail from my Domain Provider or any other company that looks legit then I use my Browser to go to the website, log in and look at the Messages.

If there is nothing there the eMail is Spam.

Telephone calls, different response, if a live person is on the line they are either told to hold and I put the phone down or next to the radio/tv or if they are from an Energy Company the person is told to ffff off, as these sods are really persistent, if a recorded message, I do nothing and they disconnect the call.

Scam phone calls from individuals who have an accent from a certain sub-continent? Before the caller commences to speak, you usually hear much background chatter. This is other scammers "working".
The chatter is also an excellent giveaway, as is "Hello, my name is ....... ".  An accent from a certain sub-continent but an English name? I then state "Police Computer Crime Unit"!
