Louis of France and his bribes to the English
« on: Saturday 09 August 25 10:14 BST (UK) »
In the 1660s, Louis of France bribed King Charles to encourage him to get more deeply involved in the Spanish Netherlands conflict. In 1666, Sydney was given 100,000 crowns to help remove the monarch. It seems that a 1678 French  document detailed some 25 English gentlemen who had been paid bribes to remove Charles. Most of the bribes were 500 Guineas.

Does anyone know of any works that give more details re the above?

Have you seen this article?

The footnotes include plenty of resources for further research.

The unrest was due to religion.

Much like today where one religion is trying to rule the world.
