Help sought with navigating Militaryarchives.ie records
« on: Friday 08 August 25 15:35 BST (UK) »
Hi, I am trying to access any files or records relating to Edward Brady from Derrylin/Belturbet in Fermanagh/Cavan.
I know he was held on the prison ship Argenta from 1922 to 1925 and went on hunger strike while there.
I cannot locate any files relating to him, but I did stumble upon a document discussing a company from Drumalee and why there is so little documentation on the company. The document ends by stating the only files they have are for Philip Fitzpatrick, Michael McGearly and Edward Brady, then gives Edward Brady's file reference as SP 6386. But when I search under his name and that reference, nothing is found.
Any assistance would be much appreciated.
Paul.

It’s a very difficult site to navigate.

Assuming SP stands for service pension.

Presumably as he was in prison Edward wouldn’t have been able to apply for a pension at the time of the first round of applications.
I believe the upload of files started with those who served in 1916, then War of Independence who were pro-treaty (not sure if they have uploaded all of these yet) then those who could apply in the second round (1934 Act) ie. Those who were anti-treaty but had served in the War of Independence. There may be none of these online yet.

My grandfather was anti-treaty and his file isn’t online yet, he applied in Dec 1935.
I applied for his file in 2012 and received in just over a year later in May 2013.

Even if Edward did apply as soon as he was released in 1925 he would have been one of the later applicants so his file may not have been uploaded yet. ( have to admit I don’t know what year the first applications were made)

There is a page somewhere on the site that gives a list of each years uploads.

Thanks for the info Sinann. Looks like my best bet is to contact Military Archives direct to ascertain if they have a file for Edward Brady.
Regards.
Paul.

Rathmore, thank you for taking the time to read my post and replying.
Very interesting. As I said in my reply to Sinann, I think the best thing for me to do is contact Military Archives directly, and in fact, I have already done so this afternoon.
Thanks again.
Paul.
