Where are Mary Cope and daughter in 1901?
« on: Sunday 27 July 25 17:23 BST (UK) »

I am hoping someone is able to help me locate a couple of people in 1901. I have searched but with no luck.

In 1887, on September 10th a marriage took place in St Jude's Birmingham for Joseph Samuel Cope, age 47 (widower) occupation a  painter,  and Mary Ann Ashley age 21 (spinster). The marriage certificate is on Ancestry.

In 1891 the couple are at 107 Cook Street, Aston.  Joseph (49) and Mary Ann Cope (23) now have  a daughter age 8 months, born Sparkbrook. Head of the household is Emma Ashley ( Joseph, is her son -in -law and gives his occupation as a painter). I'm pretty sure this occupation is a decorator /painter rather than an artist /painter. (RG12/2426 p9)

In 1901 I think I may have found Joseph in 1901 living with his son from a previous marriage ( also called Joseph and his wife Elizabeth) (RG13/2826 p27) It looks like he is still married.

However I cannot find his wife Mary Cope or their daughter, Winifred A Cope in 1901.

Would appreciate all suggestions for how I might find them.

Wow! They both look like very likely matches. I've looked for so long so really appreciate the help.

The 1901 census matches with the mother's name and age. Also Winifred ( Winnie) is the correct age and has been correctly registered as step daughter.

Also the marriage looks like a distinct possibility - although the name has changed with Martha also added. The bride's father though was called George Ashley.

Really pleased with these - thank you both!

Just seen further updates. Mary (Martha) in 1911 which confirms that relationship.
But then seen something else to look up - thanks LadyHawk
I love it when the info comes together!

Not quite - this was the 1901 census and her mother didn’t get married to Harry until 1906  ;D

True! - I hadn't spotted that.

I also don't think Martha Mary was a widow when she married in 1906 as I think her husband from 1887, Joseph Samuel Cope - who had been living with his son in 1901 was, by 1911, in Birmingham Workhouse. Though I still need to confirm it is the same man. Technically though I suppose they had been apart long enough for her to assume she was a widow.
