Irish James KELLY and Scottish Agnes BRECK marry in Dumfries in 1823
« on: Saturday 26 July 25 08:37 BST (UK) »
Agnes BRECK (abt. 1801-1872) married James KELLY (abt. 1801-?) in Dumfries, Scotland on 8 Nov 1823.

Although Agnes consistently stated that Dumfries was her birthplace throughout her life (e.g. in census records), I have been unable to find a birth or baptism record for her.

Agnes, James and her young expanding family move from Dumfries to Greenside, Midlothian (Edinburgh) in 1841 and then widowed Agnes and family move to Liverpool by the 1851 census. Agnes died in Lancashire in 1872.

Census records state that James KELLY was born in Ireland. He was living in Dumfries when he married Agnes and started a family. James died between the 1841 and 1851 census records.

My research has been hindered by the commonality of the KELLY surname (even in Dumfries, Scotland) and the various spelling interpretations of BRECK (e.g. BROCK, BRACK, BRAKE, BECK).

My research queries are:
1. Who are Agnes BRECK's parents?
2. Where in Ireland was James KELLY born and who are his parents?
3. Did James come to Scotland on his own or with his family?
4. When and where did James die?

Does anyone have any suggestions to help me with my research? Any wisdom would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

BRECK, DAVIS, DEACON, PITSON, ROBERTSON, BYERS, SWIFT, COLEMAN, KELLY, HALL, MOORE, CANE, JONES, MENZIES, McCULLOCH, McLEAN, MILNE

Have you investigated if Owen KIRRACHER has any connection?

Their first child born.
RC baptism. Have you looked at the record for names of sponsors / godparents, and other detail?

Breck is a rather uncommon name. So there are only a few to investigate.

There is a William Breck and Helen Irvine in Dumfries who have some baptisms there starting abt 1806.

This Breck family in 1841 are from those above parents

There is also an earlier generation of BRECK in Dumfries.
Father William (mother probably Helen Tait) with baptisms starting abt 1779

When searching use wildcards to pick up various spelling such as Br*k*

Looking at naming patterns can be of use at times.
Does your Kelly family have any children / grandchildren with middle names?

Thanks Neale,
yes, I have the entries with the variations of BRECK for births.
In terms of ancestors, IRVINE (IRVING) & TAIT are hopeful candidates.
The issues with the birth records for Agnes BRECK, are that she seems to be a generation out... I will keep looking.
I really appreciate your suggestions. Thank you.
