citation for Ireland, Catholic Parish Registers, 1655-1915
« on: Friday 25 July 25 18:56 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am struggling with these document.  In my tree I have a mother Mary Flanagan and father Patrick Walsh (some people have used Patrick (Pate) Walsh.  A son called Michael Patrick Walsh born around 1855 / 1859.   I managed to track down Michael Patrick Walsh Headstone died 9th January 1914 aged 55, Lena, Crossmolina, Mayo, Ireland.  Plus I think his Baptism record

Couple of issues discrepancy with age for a start for Mary Flanagan and Michael Partick Walsh

Baptism record is recorded as Hannaghan but I think it does look like Flannagan.  However its really hard to tell with the repeat use of the surname Flannagan.  The fathers name is spelt Pete or Pate (could be short for Patrick)

Census 1851 and its Return.  Mother is Mary Flanagan and Father is Peter Walsh and son is Michael Walsh an Applicant (not sure what that means)

Because they were not married until 1853 am assuming that is why the mother has not taken the fathers surname yet.  Location is Porridgetown, Oughterad, Co Galway

Is this the same family?  I have attached the documents to help.

In my tree I have Patrick Walsh Born 1819 Died 1905.  Mary Flanagan born 1821 Died 1909 (Mary Birth is not confirmed the ones I can find are for a woman much older cant find anything near 1821).  Martin Patrick Walsh born 1859 (some say 1859) and Died 9th January 1914.  All in Crossmolina  :D

(Apologies for the attachments I have been struggling to resize them for upload)
Thank you

The Pension application is quite straight-forward. On the 30 July 1917 Michael Walsh applied for the Pension. In order for the family to be found in 1851 (and thus verify that Michael was old enough for the Pension- 80 years old at than time) he had to provide details so that a clerk in Dublin could find the census return. Michael gave his parents' names, where they were living in 1851 (Porridgetown). The record was found, extracted and a copy also sent to Michael.
If the family couldn't be found in the census there would be lots more written on the form such as other possible places they might have lived at the time. If the applicant could not be found with the family this would also have been noted.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

I am not sure I am reading this right.
If your family are in Crossmolina , I would think the 1851 information, Oughterard ,  is not them.
You mention Michael Patrick Walsh and also Martin Patrick Walsh. Do you have baptisms for both of these.

Had more to add but had to deal with something offline. In addition to what heywood has added- the 1917 Pension applicant was not only found in the 1851 census but was 80 years old or older in 1917 (otherwise it would have been noted on the form that he wasn't found).

I apologise I have corrected it, it should be Martin patrick Walsh.
