Where is Studley, Devon?
« on: Friday 25 July 25 18:17 BST (UK) »
My 3x great grandfather, Thomas Yeandle/Yendole/Yendall/Yendel features in the 1841 census in North Petherton, Somerset, with his wife Frances. They live in an area called "Compass". He is supposedly 75 and "born in county". (So is absolutely everyone on the page... )

In the 1851 census he now lives in the High Street, North Petherton, Somerset and is 85 which gives a birth around 1765/1766. This time he/the enumerator claims he was born in Studley, Devon

Does anyone have access to the baptism records for this place? Is it Stoodleigh, do you think? If so, are the parish registers for Stoodleigh available on line anywhere? What parish might it have been part of/related to in the mid 1760s?

Thanks for any ideas/help. I'm trying to confirm his parents, obviously.

From GenUKI:

"STOODLEIGH is a parish and small village, 5 miles south-south-west from Bampton station on the Exe Valley line of the Great Western railway and 5¾ north-north-west from Tiverton, in the North Eastern division of the county, hundred of Witheridge, Cullompton petty sessional district, Tiverton union and county court district, rural deanery of Tiverton West, and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter."

Parish Registers going back to 1597 are held in the Devon Record Office.

The Devon FHS publishes indexes covering (as of June 2004): Marriages 1754-1837, Burials 1813-1837 - for details see their Devon Parish List.

From Wiki which says it's an ancient pub

The place in Somerset called "Compass" refers to The Compass Inn, a pub and restaurant located in Bridgwater, specifically at North Petherton.

Not what you are looking for, but in the 1838 tithe records for North Petherton there is a Thomas Yeandle occupying two adjacent small plots in the area labelled as "Compass" on later maps, lying just just NW from North Petherton. The building on the tithe map seems to correspond to Compass Lodge on this later map:

and you can see the Compass Inn further up the road.

The owner of the land is recorded as John Yeandle.

Thank you for the replies so far; I had already investigated Stoodleigh a bit, but found no records, and knew the whereabouts of the Compass Inn - used to drive past in our ancient car every couple of weeks, as a small child, to visit my grandfather in Bridgwater in the late 50s. I suppose my Thomas lived in a cottage thereabouts.
The map and tithe records are interesting: probably John and Thomas, the eldest two sons. My line is through James the third son.

Hi, for completeness the is also a Stoodleigh, in West Buckland in Devon. Stoodleigh Barton, Middle Stoodleigh etc.
The earliest exemplars of the name seem to be Somerset. 1600’s.

Perhaps an assumption on the part of the enumerator?

Studley Farm, Wanstrow, Somerset?

Thank you David for that information. I"ll have a look in due course. Don't think it would be the Farm near Frome, but I'll see.

Hi,
No, but it was just a thought that the enumerator may have made an assumption. It’s not far off the same distance.
Or perhaps there is/was a more local Studley?

Also have you ruled out the Thomas Yendle baptised in North Petherton in 1760?
Older than he claimed? Also birthplace not always place of baptism?

Happy Hunting
