Sunnyside, Newcastle? or Durham in 1943

I would like help with an address given in 1943 for my uncle. I can't work out if it is Durham (poss Gateshead) or Newcastle up on tyne, and therefore Northumberland, and now Tyne and Weir. I really want to know which Archive office to address for more records. The address is

14 Pennyfine Lane, Sunnyside, Newcastle.

I appreciate bounderies change, but this one has confused me. Any help much appreciated.

There is still a Pennyfine Road, running SE out of Sunniside, which is south of Whickham, which in turn is west of Newcastle.

I think the Newcastle part of the address is misleading.

In the 1939 register Pennyfine Road was in Wickham Urban District, County Durham.
This is turn became part of the Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead.

So if you are thinking in terms of the correct archive office, I think that would be Tyne & Wear.

by 1945 Fred was living in Derwent Terrace, Front Street, Dipton according to letters written by my father from Burma/India

Hi, I am still trying to prove that Fred Watts b.1911 listened to german morse code during ww2. I have a photo of him in uniform that appears like the Home Guard, but he's not in Durham Records.
 He was almost blind and was a radio ham in Nairobi.  He could tap and receive 20 words a minute. he was also very clever and read newspapers with a microscope. Radio hams had to hand in their tapping equipment. In 1939 he was in London working as a barman! I think he was training to be a listener!

I have searched Bletchley Park and am aware of Y Service..But don't know how to trace someone who signed the 'Secrets Act' He must have kept his secret. I've tried the National Archive twice, they just don't know. Regards carolmc

There is a death notice in the Sunderland Daily Echo 18 Dec 1937
WATTS - At 11 Fox St on December 17 (suddenly) Edith, beloved wife of Fred Watts. Interment at Bishopwearmouth Cemetery on Tuesday; cortege leaving residence 2.15

FreeBMD shows this lady was 51, so maybe this is Fred jnr's Mam and could help confirm his intended address on the passenger list and help you to refine North East as the area he was in when he returned?

Hi   Edith should read Ada, I think if you sound out Ada it could be taken as Edith. Ada was married to Fred Watts senior and she was buried with her mother. I have photo of the gravestone. Fred senior remained in Nairobi until he died. Fred Watts junior was in Kenya working for Cable and Wireless in Nairobi, in the receiving station from 1927 to 1937. he was a radio ham and reached Switzerland germany Holland Norwich uk 4 postcards.
