Isabella Rowntree

A very long shot this in so many ways.

When my ancestor Isabella Rowntree nee Chicken wrote her will in 1818, she refered to her daughter as being Isabella Martin, wife of John Martin of Monkwearmouth (Durham), potter.

I cannot find a marriage between these two, but on FindMyPast there is a marriage for an Isabella Leonard to a John Martin at Bishopwearmouth in 1798.  If she were a widow (no idea at this point) she could be the Isabella Rowntree who married James Leonard in Gosport in 1788.

What interests me about the marriage in 1798 is that on Boyd's index there is a notification that banns were called at Newcastle St John for the marriage (the Rowntrees were from Newcastle) and the spouse is refered to as Jn. S Martin.

Isabella the younger's niece Hannah married a John Shepherd Martin (a potter) in 1790 in Jarrow/Heworth and I have totally failed to find out where he is from, so I am intrigued to know if there is a connection between the two men.  Hannah and John had only two children in 1794 and 1796 so it would be possible that Isabella was marrying her neice's widower?

Does anyone have access to the banns at NCL St John or the Bishopwearmouth marriages that year to see if she is marked as a widow or he a widower, or if there is any more information on John Martin? 

Any other suggestions would be very welcome.

For the baptism of Hannah 16 October 1796 Jarrow  the father is  John Steven Martin.

I've just found Hannah's burial on 3 Sep 1797 at Gateshead St Mary - marked as wife of John Shepherd Martin

This marriage was in 1782 not 1788
Isabella is recorded as Roundtree.  (Everyone, except the regular witness,  marked)

Both she and James Leonard are “of this parish’

If you search for Isabella Rowntree, there are 4 refs. for her (including the 2 above) and also Thomas Thursfield, Catherine Craig and James Rowntree.

The will mentions the above 3 as grandchildren and also son James Rowntree, a search for Thomas Thursfield also comes up with details of a will.

FindMyPast has an indexed burial 25 Aug 1830 for an Isabella Martin, age 72, at St Peter’s, Monkwearmouth.
