Isabella Campbell of High Callerton

Hi,
I’ve just made a new discovery that’s confused me. My greatx5 grandfather was Angus Campbell born abt 1790-1800 in Scotland who married to Ann Carter at Bedale, Yorkshire in 1826. They had four children, which included James (1826), my ancestor. Angus was a tin plate worker and died at Low Friar St, Newcastle in 1845. His wife Ann had died in 1837.

My James Campbell went on to marry Dorothy Harrison in 1855. James then died in 1859. By 1861 census Dorothy was living at High Callerton as a widow with her children. However, I’ve also found a few pages prior to her an Isabella Campbell b. 1802 in Scotland living with a granddaughter Janet Carr.

I purchased Isabella’s death record in 1872 (died at High Callerton) and it shows her as widow of Angus Campbell a farm labourer. I don’t know if it’s just coincidence but I’d like to find out if she connected to mine.

Any help is greatly appreciated

In the 1871 census she has a son John Campbell (35, born Scotland) with her.

looks more like Janet to me.

Thanks for the response. I’ve fixed Janet’s name now. I know my Angus had a son named John Carter Campbell born in 1828.

I definitely think this is possible and had it on my list of theories for a while. But I’ve never 100% confirmed. After all Angus did have a daughter named Mary Ann later on (possibly a family name?)

In Angus’ and Ann’s banns at Bedale he is listed as a bachelor. Off the top of my head their children: James (1826), John Carter (1828), Mary Ann (1831), Angus (1833) and Infant (1837).

Hi Mulberry Rose,

I just wondered if the Isabella Campbell on the Millers memorial at St Alban, Earsdon may be connected to you?  She was the wife of a John Campbell.

There are links between the Conroy/Miller families and I think the Campbells too.
The Jacob & Jane Miller nee Anderson on this memorial were the parents of Isabella Conroy nee Miller who married Thomas Conroy son of my 2nd Grt Grandparents James & Elizabeth Conroy nee Fitzpatrick.  The above mentioned Millers' son Michael married Elizabeth Watson who was the daughter of James and Elizabeth's daughter Mary Watson nee Conroy.

Thanks for this info, it looks very intriguing. I’ve not come across any overlap of my Campbell’s with the Conroy/Miller side in researching so far.

My James’ side doesn’t seem to have any obvious connection to this John/Isabella couple but it might be of interest that James’ brother John Carter Campbell was a commercial traveller and hatter. He married Elizabeth Armer in 1851 at Newcastle, they had four children; Alice Ann (1852-1854), James Angus (1854), Robert (1856), Evangeline (1858-1860). John Carter died in April 1881 and was living at Whitley Bay. His son James Angus in the 1881 census was also a hatter and lived in Gateshead.

Interestingly James’ daughter Williammina (b. 1855 at Swalwell) was noted down as “Isa Campbell” in the 1861 census at High Callerton. Her name was misspelled in other later census records too but not as a wholly different name.
