Do you know what your Thomas Walmsley's occupation was? The one who married Elizabeth Hacking was a joiner and could sign his name.
Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
Dorset / Hants: Derham, Stride, Purkiss, Sibley
Yorkshire: Pottage, Carr, Blackburn, Depledge
Sussex: Goodyer, Christopher, Trevatt
Lanark: Scott (soldier went to Jersey CI)
Jersey: Fowler, Huelin, Scott

Hi,

There are several trees on Ancestry which you may like to investigate. The only trouble is that you cannot be sure how accurate they are. You could contact the tree owners to discuss further, but to me it looks a very confusing picture without much actual evidence.

Most have Thomas Walmsley baptised 30 Sept 1763 at Hest Bank Lancaster with a marriage in Liverpool to Elizabeth Corbett (also from Lancaster baptised 19 March 1764) - the 1780 marriage records show both from the parish of Liverpool at the time of marriage (his occupation shown as a Joiner) with the children you mention being attached to this couple. They would have been 16 or 17 at date of marriage so possibly suspect?  Other trees show the couple from Liverpool itself (born c1760) and not from the Lancaster area so it is confusing. Their first born James was a wheelwright at time of marriage in 1814. Another son Thomas (1785) was married in 1808 and was a cooper at his marriage.

If you are sure your Thomas Walmsley was born in 1755 in Walton-Le-Dale then he supposedly died in the Preston area circa 1839 and the trees have linked his marriage to both Elizabeth Corbett and Elizabeth Beatson. My own thought pattern is that births in Liverpool are very unlikely to be linked to the Walton-Le-Dale/Preston areas.

There is another Thomas Walmsley born in Ormskirk c1755 (nearer Liverpool than Walton-Le-Dale) whose parents were James and Betty - James was the name of their first child born 1781 and another of Thomas's children was named Betsey - perhaps relevant - who knows?

My "guess" is that the couple from Lancaster/Hest Bank moved to Liverpool but I am concerned that they were very young at date of marriage that without real proof (such as DNA details) it really looks like an impossible task to get absolute certainty of the position.

Unless someone else has some bright ideas?

Alan

I have a similar conundrum with an Elizabeth in Berkshire around the same sort of time, too many generations back for DNA to be of much use.  I presume you've not managed to "kill off" any of the candidates in infancy or childhood?  Or found any Wills left by their fathers?
