42 Gun street spitalfields
« on: Thursday 17 July 25 09:21 BST (UK) »
Hi all
looking for further help locating number 42 Gun street, following advice on here I looked at the Insurance map of 1890 ,but numbers of Gun street jump from 40 next to public house across Broomfield street, to number 47 which is next to an Iron mongers numbered (38 Brushfield Street,) no sign of numbers in between 40 and 47 Gun street, 42 is on the electoral roles with Sophia Foreman there in 1841 &1861, so I can't understand why I can't find it, any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks Royfamily

I can see the same gap in addresses on the 1910 Valuation map, and in 1901, 1891 and 1881.

Can someone please post more details, or a link, to the census record(s) for Sophia Foreman at this address.

Oh yes, also I searched newspapers for the exact address and only got one hit which was actually to an OCR error (misreading of 49).

Hello

I think I can see why you're getting a problem. In your earlier thread you mentioned that you can see Sophia Foreman in 1851 and 1861 census at 42 Gun Street. That is correct, but it is Southwark not Spitalfields.

That’s what I was suspecting, but I was too lazy to dig!

The 1861 Census reads "87 Friar St, 1 Gun St ..."

This shows Friar St off Blackfriars Rd and Gun St  https://london1868.com/weller55b.htm

West side of map.

AB - I've been digging.

HT I’ve been struggling to get a good overlay map but I can see that Gun Street became Boyfield Street at some point, and is still there. Apologies if this is already covered by your links.
