HILL family - Kilnoe and Tuamgraney; Caherhurley; Ballymalone
« on: Tuesday 15 July 25 11:03 BST (UK) »
Further to searches for the HILL family I have narrowed things down a lot after finding children baptised to Thomas HILL and Sally FLANAGAN in the parish of Kilnoe and Tuamgraney
1. Nancy (?Anne) 9 Oct 1834, sponsors Thomas Burke, Bridget Hallinan, Caherhurley
2. Sally 4 March 1837, sponsors John Madigan, Norry Flanagan, Caherhurley
3. Patrick 12 Feb 1840, Sponsors Pat Burke, Nelly Burke, Caherhurley

Tithe applotment records (Clare library) 1827 lists Thomas Hill with Patrick Hill and Thomas Burke in Caherhurley as landholders.

Griffiths valuation 1855 has 3 listings for Thomas Hill as a tenant; I would like to know how to use the reference numbers from this – Parish of Tomgraney; Ballymalone; 15a.
Is it possible to use this information to work out the current location?

Many thanks
Lou

Griffith's Valuation along with the associated maps are on the free AskAboutIreland website, these include plot references, you may have to switch to the older maps using the drop down to the top right - the colour maps date from a while after the actual valuation so may be out of step.

Added - the maps part of the site are not working at the moment, if you have access to FindMyPast you can find the maps on there

If OP is happy with the location of the townland, as opposed to the specific plot, then it is here
https://www.townlands.ie/clare/tulla-upper/tomgraney/scarriff/ballymalone/

And here is the location of Caherhurley.
https://www.townlands.ie/clare/tulla-upper/kilnoe/caherhurley/caherhurly/

Note that it does NOT border Ballymalone.

Just for information.
There is a marriage in February, 1833
Thomas Hill (Tomgraney) and Mary Cusack.

As your Thomas Hill was married to Sally Flanagan, perhaps Thomas of Tomgraney is not your Thomas.

Added
I can’t see any births to this couple though.

thanks everyone for your replies
I hadn't realised there was a map function on the Griffiths website [although not working as you say :) ]
Thanks for the pointers about the townland locations also.

Is it likely that the 3 Thomas Hill's listed are 3 separate people?

I am visiting in September, so if all 3 locations are fairly close together, I can perhaps see all 3. And the church in Tuamgraney.

kind regards, Lou

As far as I can see each of the three Thomas Hill entries on the Valuation in Tomgraney parish are listed as occupier of houses, so different people. If a single person holds more than one plot, it generally one with a house and others with just land.
