I have just sent The Times an email regarding this.
The 1861 census just has my ancestor as a printer, employer not mentioned.
I found a short article in a newspaper from 1864, giving his name and that he was a printer at The Times, Printing House Square. This was about his fathering a child (he was already married with a couple of children) but didn't reveal his age or any other details that I could check.
