George Edridge
« on: Sunday 13 July 25 10:44 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Area: Layston, Buntingtford, Hertfordshire.

This is my last chance to confirm the correct identity of the George Edridge who married Ann Lockey in about 1735 in Hertfordshire.

The family were Quakers and I have managed to trace quite a lot of info from the Ancestry website but have not been able to trace the marriage of George and Ann.

George was either the George Edridge born on 17/02/1708, (17/12/1707 according to the Quaker calendar), to Thomas and Kathleen Edridge or the George Edridge born on 18/10/1715 to George and Ruth Edridge.

To confuse matters even further I think that the Thomas Edridge who married Kathleen and the George Edridge who married Ruth were both the sons of George Edridge (died 1723) and Mary (died 1717). I have checked Wills of various Edridge family members but cannot clarify this issue.

Thomas and Kathleen's first child seems to have been born in 1703 and their last child in 1712 so maybe Kathleen died at around this time.  George and Ruth's first child was born in 1714 and they continued having children until 1732.

A Ruth Edridge was witness to the birth of several of George Edridge and Ann Lockey's children but could be either George's mother or aunt, (especially if his mother was deceased).

I am leaning towards the George who married Ann Lockey being the son of Thomas and Kathleen (b 1706/1707), only because the other George, (born 1715), would have been quite young to have had his first child, (Sarah), in 1736, (but frustratingly not young enough!).

The George Edridge I am trying to trace died in about January 1772, (Will was proven 12/02/1772), aged either 56 or 63/64, depending on which DOB is correct (and, of course, I cannot trace his age at death which would resolve the issue!). In his Will he mentions, amongst others, wife, Ann, sons, George, John, Lockey, Michael, William and Richard, daughter, Katherine, son-in-law, Charles Thorpe, (who had been married to his deceased, daughter, Sarah), and Joseph Smith, of Bishop's Stortford, an Ironmonger.

I have paid for a search by HALS (Hertfordshire Archives and Libriaries) but they were unable to trace the marriage of George to Ann Lockey or confirm who his parents were so this is really my last chance to move any further back with this family.

Kind regards,

Coreen

In addition to the PCC wills, have you also looked at the wills at Chelmsford?

There are a few wills of Edridge at Layston, including the will of George Edridge of Buntingford [Layston], Hertfordshire, maltster, in 1748/9.

Hi,

Yes, found that but you need a subscription to access the Will and don't really want to spend more money on this as have already spent over £40.00 with HALS. Maybe next month. Thanks for your help though.

Kind regards,

Good Morning
If you cheat a bit and zoom into the image of George Edridge's Will 1748 from Essex Archives we find mention of his brothers William and Michael and sister Ann ,Ruth ,Sussanah and Sarah.
So he is the son of George and Ruth  who must have died c 1748 which is 2 years before the birth of Richard s of George and Ann Edridge so not the son of George and Ann Edridge.

As for Thomas and Kathleen and their son George , it does look like Thomas and Kathleen are the brother and wife to George and Ruth.

George Edridge PCC Will 1723 gives his children Thomas,Mary ,George and late Elizabeth Robins and her children George and Elizabeth.

His daughter Mary/Marias Will 1732 adds to the picture
Nephew John Gamble s of John Gamble,
Brother Thomas and his son George .
Brother George  and his kids George,Micheal ,Anne,Ruth ,Sarah and Susannah. Also son Thomas
Niece Elizabeth Robins.( Quaker births 2.12.1695 Sandon d of George and Elizabeth)

Kathleen did indeed die 28.5.1716 Baldock wife of Thomas which explains why there are no more children.
Ruth Edridge the witness to George and Ann's children seems to be a cousin ,or granny.
Ruth 1718-6.11.1791 would fit.The daughter of George and Ruth.

George and Elizabeth Robins other children -George 23.9.1687,Mary 19.4.1689 and Hester 13.5.1692.
So Elizabeth Edridge born late 1660's ,with perhaps younger Thomas,George and Mary.
John Gamble married Susannah Edridge 22.10.1702 .She was the daughter of George ,draper.
Witnesses George and Mary Edridge senior.Thomas ,George and Mary Edridge .Thomas Gamble

Struggling to find the baptisms for Thomas and his siblings but it does sort out which George it was .

Brilliant detective work, CD.

There are so many wills available, both PCC and Chelmsford, that it might be possible to trace them back to the PCC will of William Ederiche of Buntingford, 1549.

At that time the spelling Ederiche, Edriche or sometimes Etheridge seems to be usual. For the 16th century there are two resources that I have found very useful.

First, The Herts genealogist and antiquary, available at Internet Archive.
https://archive.org/

There were only three volumes published in the 1890s, but they are full of useful information from Lay Subsidies, Feet of Fines, and wills. For example, an abstract of the will of JOHN ETHERIDGE of Buntingford, glover, 1577.

Then, Common Pleas and Kings/Queens Bench.
https://www.medievalgenealogy.org.uk/aalt/cp40_search.php

There seems to have been some other Edriches around St Albans and Watford, but also in Buntingford, Wadesmill, and Braughing.
William Ederiche, of Wadesmyll, miller, in 1483
William Ederiche, of Braughyng, miller, in 1500
William Ederyche, of Buntingford, miller, in 1502
William Edryche, of Buntingford glover, in 1536

Hi,

Had another look at this.

If the George Edridge who was married to Ruth and died c1748 was the father of my George, (born 1715???, and married Ann Lockey), is it not strange that in his Will he mentions his brothers William, Michael, and sisters, Ann, Ruth, Sussanah and Sarah but not his wife, Ruth, (although she could possibly be deceased), or any of his children?    The George born to George and Ruth in 1715 had all those siblings plus a brother, Thomas (1714) and a sister, Mary, (1717).    As there are no children mentioned isn't is more likely that the George born to Thomas and Kathleen Edridge in 1706 is the correct person?   The George born in 1715 would then have been the one who died c1748, aged about 33, (possibly unmarried), and the correct George would be the one born in 1707, married Ann Lockey, and died in 1772, aged about 65.  I have checked the Will of the George who died in 1772 and he is definitely the correct person as mentions wife and all living children.

Sorry but I am quite confused!

Kind regards,

Coreen

If I am following CD correctly, he is saying (in brief):

George Edridge, born about 1660, died 1723 (PCC will), married Elizabeth Robins.

Thomas Edridge, son of above, born about 1685, married Kathleen. Their son was George (your guy), born 1707/8.

This must be the baptism of the older George Edridge (PCC 1723), christening 28 May 1657 in Layston, Herts, son of Thomas and Elizabeth.

George is also mentioned in the will of Thomas Edridge, draper (1665).

And a few more generations back, from London Marriage Licences:
Etheridge, John (Etteridge), of Buntingford, parish of Layston, Herts, glover, and Ellen Hagger, of same, spinster, daughter of — Hagger, late of Chishull Magna, Essex, "agricola," deceased, gen. lic, 20 Feb. 1586/7.
