Brick Wall
« on: Friday 11 July 25 08:58 BST (UK) »
I have come to a dead end with my research and am unable to find people or understand what happened.
I have been researching my grandmothers family tree. Her Grandmother was Sarah Jane Lloyd born in Llantarnam 1858. On the 31st Oct 1880, she married a Sidney Pragam b. 1856, a collier. Father Thomas Pragam, witness George Pragam. I have a copy of the marriage certificate, so the details are correct.

In the 1881 Census I find them living in Risca. Their surname is different.

Sidney Peahans Head 24 Coal Miner
Sarah J Wife 23

They had two daughters Matilda Presswood Pigham b. 10th Oct 1881 Mother Sarah Jane Pigham, formerly Lloyd, Father Sidney Pigham. The second daughter was Olive Evalina Pigham b. 1888.

In the 1891 census, Sarah Jane appears in Wigan having left both children with her in laws who appear on the censuses.

1891 Census 21 Gidlow Lane Wigan
Robert Lewis Head 33 Puddler Monmouth Blaina
Sarah J Lewis Wife Cwmbran
Mary J dau 2 months Derby Sheepbridge
James Brother 22 Monmouth Pontypool

I have found subsequent censuses of her with children, surname Lewis.

I am trying to find a death for a Sidney Pragam, Pigham, Peahan or whatever his name was around 1887 – 1890, and a marriage to a Robert Lewis around 1890. I have searched on deaths by just entering Sidney DOB 1856 date of death 1885 – 1891 and omitting a surname. Then I looked for something which could have been mistaken for his surname. This produced over 700 results, but nothing I was looking for.

There may be no marriage to find?
Divorce was very expensive in Victorian times.

Easier, and cheaper, to simply live together. ;)

Born Bishop Nympton, Devon, circa 1856, father Thomas.

Could not write his name.

This record at Ancestry (dated 1883) says he deserted her. https://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/collections/62387/records/45721375

so Olive may not be his bio daughter

Seems he put it about a bit too. Looked at his medical records. Treated for Syphillis a few times

Not that this helps with the death or whereabouts of Sidney Pragam/Pigham....born c1856 Bishop Nympton, Devon ???

You may already have this but just in case 1921 I think Sarah Jane Lewis is in Wigan her birth place given as Lancashire b1857 with a Joseph Melling b1868 Lancashire
