GRO Digitisation Question
« on: Wednesday 09 July 25 18:13 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know, or can someone point me in the right direction to find out where they are up to with the digital death certificates, I have tried to purchase a death in Lancashire for the year 1886 and the GRO says it is not available yet.

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/faq.asp#GROIndexReferences

Ordering via our online service
The following can be ordered through our GRO online ordering service -

Certificates for birth, death, marriage, civil partnership and adoption events registered in England and Wales and for certain British Nationals, who were born, married, formed a civil partnership or died overseas.
Commemorative marriage certificates for silver, ruby, golden and diamond wedding anniversaries.
PDFs for historic digitised civil registration records held by GRO (birth entries from 1837 up to 100 years ago and death entries from 1837 to 1957).
Online View digital image for historic, digitised civil registration records held by GRO (birth entries from 1837 up to 100 years ago and death entries from 1837 - 1957).

To order a PDF or Online View digital image, you will need to provide a GRO index reference. At the point of ordering, you will be taken to the GRO online indexes so that you can search for the reference for the certificate that you are interested in. If you are unable to trace the record you can still apply for a certificate however there will be an additional administration charge if a GRO index reference is not provided.

I don't know why they are refusing one for 1886, maybe it has just been missed  :-\

Ok, tried again and this .....

I click to order the digital image and it says the following

Image not currently available for this entry, the record may alternatively be ordered as a Certificate or PDF

FAQs says

This means that the image is not held within the Online
View digital image data store. However, you may still be able to order this as a
certificate or PDF.

However next FAQ  says.....

There is no option to click on the ‘digital image’ button.

Not all records are available to view as a digital image and when this is the case the
digital image is not displayed. You still have the option to order a certificate or PDF

Confused. Maybe there's something wrong with the image then or they forgot to do it.  Will try another day because it's not worth it to me to pay more than the digital record

It could be that the page was missed, but far more likely is that someone has reported a misaligned image from that entry  or from another on the same page.

When that happens the whole page becomes unavailable as digital images.

At some point in the future the page will (hopefully) get rescanned, but you could be waiting a long time .

The point of the pdf and the reason it is more expensive is because it has human input to manually manipulate the image for any row/page misalignment and paste the original page title on top. £8 vs £3.
You can wait & hope or spend more and get within a few days.

Q8. Why is it so much cheaper than a PDF image?
This is a self-service product which requires no manual intervention and as a result
this is reflected in the cost of the product.

I myself tried to order a downloadable digital image of an 1894 death in Brighton but got the "not available right now", so likely a misaligned image, so you are not alone.
