Desperate Help to find who this soldier was
« on: Wednesday 09 July 25 17:29 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

A cousin of mine is trying to solve a family mystery.

We are looking for any information on a (W or D) G (George) Newman who was at one time stationed in Preston Barracks around 1943-1944.

From the photo we believe he may have been a Staff Sergeant in the Royal Engineers? But correct us if we are wrong.

This photo, along with the message that is written in the corner is all we have to go by so any help would be greatly appreciated. We can’t work out what the first line says either so if anyone can translate for us that would be incredible.

The photo was taken at a Newcastle photo studio of Jas Bacon & Sons.

Kindest Regards
Josie and family

Is it possible to post a photograph without that shadow it is distracting!
Do you know for sure it says Newman?

By first line do you mean the lighter photographers signature?
Think it could be Jho Bacon …

Hi Mckha489.

Thank you for replying

So the top is definitely the photographer’s signature. Thank you for confirming.

I’ll see if my cousin can send me another photo and I’ll repost.

Thank you again for taking the time to reply

Have you worked your way through the National Archives.
Not all are on there yet, but there are some.

Yes Staff Sergeant denoted by the Crown (or so my Dad who was a S/Sgt told me) opting to go up the ranks and not get an automatic commission as happened to several of my uncles who had also belonged to Officer Cadets at secondary school. . .
