Good day sirs and ladies,

Is it possible for anyone to put a rough date on this photo?

Thank you in advance for your time.

Most likely taken between 1880 and 1890. I'd lean more towards a date in the mid-1880s
- Kiernan from County Meath
- Kelly from County Kildare
- Donnelly from County Tyrone
- McKenna from County Tyrone/Moghanan

Yes definitely 1880's.

Thank you. May I ask - what is it about it that makes it definitely from the 1880s?

Not him, but hopefully I can faithfully answer and explain the reasoning. Clothing are the best aspect to inspect for as many fashion trends tend to occur based on numerous factors (includes environmental and economic factors).

This photo leans to a range from 1883-1887:

  • The Womens’ skirts still have a slight train/bustle support rather than very narrow “princess” silhouettes from the 1890s.
  • Sleeves are slim with the only fullness at the shoulder. Atypical of mid-1880s. [Preceded big “leg-of-mutton” sleeves that peak around 1895.]
  • Men carry frock coats fuller and longer (and the lapels slightly wider) than the styles a decade later.
  • High collars and tie styles (especially that turnover collar on the seated gentleman) match examples dated around 1885 in studio portraits.
