Hughes family in Marylebone
« on: Sunday 06 July 25 17:21 BST (UK) »
I am looking for information on the family of William (Silas) Hughes born in 1819 in Marylebone. His wife was Sophia born 1819. Some family trees have her maiden name as Reed and some have it as Pulsford. Their children were all born in Marylebone. They were James born in 1842, (my great grandfather), Emma born in 1844, John and William born in 1846, Thomas born in 1848 and maybe Charlotte Sophia  born in 1862 which would be 2 years after William Silas died.
I would like to know what Sophia's correct maiden name was and who Charlotte's father really was. Perhaps his death date of 1860 or her birth date of 1862 aren't correct.

Thanks for any help.

Have you looked on freebmd to see if the childrens births were registered?

If they were - use that info on GRO online to find mothers maiden name

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp

As they married after 1837 have you checked freebmd for a marriage?

You can buy a digital copy of Charlotte's birth cert for £3 using the link above

Thanks for your help and I believe both questions have been answered. Another family tree has freebmd records for all the children with Reed as their mothers maiden name. And the London England Deaths and Burials shows William died on December 27, 1862 after Charlotte was born.

I can’t see a marriage post 1837.  There are no Hughes/Reed births between 1837-1841 so logically any marriage should be after Civil Reg

If William died 27.12.1862 - why is Sophia shown as a widow on the 1861 census?   Children James, Emma, Thomas living with her

A William Hughes and Sophia Pulsford married in Westminster in January 1839. Both full age, so born 1818 or earlier. He was of King St, St James's parish and a tilman (?), father Thomas, a draper

Added: they can be found together on 1851 at that address. Childrn very different, so Sohia P is not your ancestor

Thanks. I'm very certain that his wife was Sophia Reed, but I'm still trying to find out who Charlotte's father was. I think my confusion may be in his first name. Silas seems to be correct and although William may have been a first or second name, the death record for  Silas and not William seems to be the right one. Therefore Charlotte would have been born after Silas died.

My suspicion is that she's Emma's daughter. She (and Sophia) live with Emma and her husband. Those two are the witnesses to Charlotte's marriage.

Or maybe Sophia found herself pregnant for some reason and just pretended her husband hadn;t died til after the child was born
