Birkenhead Road - Meols
« on: Sunday 06 July 25 16:25 BST (UK) »
Hello, we have been looking at the 1921 census for my great grandparents living on Birkenhead Road in Meols but the house is named 'The Corner' Birkenhead Road but there is no history of a house named that. I have been through all the other records on this census and all the houses seem to be named rather than numbered, is there a way to find out what the numbers would have been or a specific location of the house, we are visiting soon and would like to see if we can find it.

Apparently they weren't there for long. The 1922 electoral roll lists your grandfather at 19 Banks Avenue, Hoylake cum West Kirby.

Hi Shaun,

Yeah, we understand that they moved in 1922 but they may have been living in 'the corner' since they got married in 1919.

In 1921 the entries before "The Corner" include "Cintra" and "Crofton". You can see these houses labelled on the map linked below from the 1950s.

In the census, immediately before "The Corner" is "Lyndhurst". Lyndhurst, no. 182 Birkenhead Road, is still there and can be seen on streetview with its name plate intact. The neighbouring house to the east of no. 182 —namely no. 184— is my candidate for "The Corner".  I cannot see a house name on streetview but there is a plaque high up indicating that the house dates from 1914 (I must admit I was concerned that it might be later than 1921 until I saw this.) And —reassuringly— it is on the corner.
