Drew
« on: Saturday 05 July 25 16:54 BST (UK) »
I have Alice Eliza Louisa Drew, born 1881. Her. Birth certificate shows her mother as Mary Drew, a domestic servant but no father is shown. The address where she was born was 2, Miles Terrace, Walnut Tree Road, Greenwich. She was baptised at Christ Church Greenwich and this time it shows parent as Stephen & Mary Drew and shows their address as 2, Miles Terrace and Stephen’s occupation as Butler. I cannot find a marriage record
Does anyone know the area and know whether this was the sort of property which would have had servants, this is assuming the old story of servants getting too familiar.

Have you checked the 1881 census for a Stephen Drew in that area with that occupation?  Could he be her brother playing the role of husband because Mary was illegitimate?

She was baptised very quickly after birth - registered Sept qtr 1881 baptised 24.8.1881

Too coincidental that there is no father on the birth cert but suddenly one at the baptism.  Mary is single but suddenly marries a man with the same surname between the birth & the baptism??   I think not!!

1881 census shows that 2 Miles Terrace was uninhabited.

Other residences in the Terrace were occupied by Retired Victualler, Foreman Gas Works, Plumber, Bricklayer, Enginer Driver.

Added:  FindMyPast allow census searching by address - very helpful  :)

Thats odd about the census 3rd April it is unoccupied but by the 26th May it is given as the birthplace on Alice’s birth certificate. It is also given as their residence in Aug at the time of the baptism.

But the census only records those people in the building at midnight on census day?

She was baptised on 24th August - 5mths after the 1881 census.  Where did you get 26th May from?  Her birth was only registered in the Sept qtr 1881 - see my earlier reply

Found it. Although it is registered in the 3rd quarter the actual birth date is the 26th May and the certificate shows date of registration as 11th July.
