South Shields studio photo

Attached is a photograph showing a young boy. I would like to try and identify his age ( I wondered if he was around 4 years) and a possible date for when the photo was taken. His clothing is interesting and I wondered if there was perhaps a naval theme? It seems a bit  fancy for everyday wear.
 I not looking for anyone to restore the photo. The right hand side has, at some point, been torn away. As he is centrally placed I presume the missing part is the studio setting.

George AYNSLEY (AINSLEY) was at this address from 1875 till at least 1891 (and maybe 1896 when "AYNSLEY" was advertising for a day girl at this address).

I can't offer at date, but I would think the boy is 4-5 years old.  :D

I would put his age at not more than 4 years and, by today's standards, lightly built or slightly underweight.

What he's wearing is commonly called a Jolly Tar.
They were popular from the 1880's but more associated
with the 90's & early 1900's.
The backdrop is typical 1880's.
Agree aged 4/5.

Am so pleased to see your  responses to this photo. We lost all electricity last night -& with it of course the internet . It was restored late this afternoon.
Firstly Gadget, I am sorry that I wasn't able to combine the two images onto one post. The front of the photo is on the site and titled 'South Shields studio photo'.
Thankyou to all who have given ideas around date. I am now wondering if this is my grandfather who was born in 1882 - he died long before I was born. Now that I have a date for the photo I will check the address on the back of photo with the census and see if that gives any clues.
I agree with those who have suggested that the boy looks slight for his age.
I know that sailor type outfits were popular for children but have always assumed a family with a navel background. 
Will let you know how I get on with matching the address to family at that time.
