There is also a Norton in West Riding?
"NORTON, in the parish of Campsall, wapentake of Osgoldcross, liberty of Pontefract; 7½ miles from Pontefract, 8½ N. of Doncaster and Ferrybridge. 668."

And a Norton in East Riding; aka Norton-On-Derwent.
"NORTON, a parish in the wapentake of Buckrose; ½ mile SE. of Malton."
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

The Norton in Derbyshire is much closer to Laughton en le Morthen, so I just mentioned it because their proximity may not be apparent, without knowing the district.  Norton Church to Laughton Church = 8.5 miles.  Both these places are now in the diocese of Sheffield, with records at Sheffield Archives.

This should be of interest …

Shaun, thank you so so much for all this information! I had spotted a couple of the links you’ve shared but I’d ignored them as I was convinced my guy came from London as per his 1851 and 1861 census returns. Now I’m thinking maybe the census enumerator heard London for Laughton because everything else sure fits.

You have probably found Findmypast Derbyshire baptisms index has Feath Hibbard, Norton St.James, 1758.
Eldest of 9 children of John and Susannah Hibbard, some variant spellings.
