Bland Family
« on: Friday 04 July 25 09:16 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I feel like I am banging my head against a wall trying to find out more about this side of my family so I thought I would see if anyone on here can help or has any ideas I can try. I am a descendant of a guy called John Bland, who from his death records and immigration records was born in County Fermanagh sometime around 1816 he owned a hotel called the Enniskillen Arms Hotel. At some point he married Eliza, who I don't have a maiden name for as I cannot find any marriage record. They had three children John (1848), Jane (1851) and Thomas (1853). The family immigrated to the state of Victoria in Australia (1857) after Eliza died there the rest moved to New Zealand. I cannot find any record pertaining to their time in Enniskillen or generally Ireland apart from a mention on a directory in 1855 because of the hotel. They are listed on immigration records as being presbyterian. Any help or ideas of things I can try would be much appreciated.

Hi

Is this your John Bland from Fermanagh who married Eliza Buxton?

LOL 624 met in Enniskillen Arms hotel in July 1835.

In October 1837 George Willis, Enniskillen Arms Hotel in Darling Street is mentioned in Enniskillen Chronicle & Erne Packet.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Find A Grave gives details of John Bland's wife as Eliza Buxton and says they married 1850 in Belfast. Civil registration of non-Catholic marriages started in 1845 and I don't see a marriage around that date anywhere in Ireland.

Yeah, I don't know where the Buxton last name came from for his wife. One of the cousins Arthur John Bland went back to Ireland and in a typed out page of research it says that John married in Belfast but doesn't say when or her last name. I've assumed the Buxton last name came from a confusion with two people from Allstonefield John Bland and Eliza Buxton who lived around the same time. But I don't know.

That's interesting thanks, I hadn't found any other mention of the hotel before. I did find a record on PRONI about a lease from the earl of Enniskillen to John Bland in 1854 I'll have to order a copy of that at some point.
