Who were Bernard's parents?  Are you sure about the information that you have?

There's a tree on Ancestry that seems to be about your Bernard, but may have co-mingled two Bernard Gallaghers, as one seems to be Bernard G. Gallagher who was born in Pennsylvania in 1928 & died in Ohio on 20 May 1982.

Hi shellyesq, Bernard's parents were definitely John Gallagher and Bridget(McGinley) Gallagher. He may have been born as early as 1926, not 1928. He may also have married Margaret J Reilly. He certainly applied for a marriage license in 1948 to marry her.

There's a WWII draft registration card for Bernard Hugh Gallagher, b. 19 Jun. 1926 in Long Branch, New Jersey, living in Brooklyn at 42 Sterling Pl. with Mrs. Bridget Gallagher.  There's an entry on the NJ birth index that has a Bernard Gallagher born on that date in that town too.

I think this is his mother's obituary - https://www.newspapers.com/article/brooklyn-eagle-obituary-for-bridget-gall/175856664/

Bridget's burial seems to be at Holy Cross Cemetery in section ROSE, Row: G, Plot: 80 and there is a Bernard Gallagher with an internment date of 16 June 1984 in the same section in plot 78, so maybe that's him?  Cemetery listings searchable here - https://www.ccbklyn.org/locate-a-loved-one/

Bernard & Mary's marriage license is here - https://a860-historicalvitalrecords.nyc.gov/view/11125599  If you keep scrolling through it, the last page has their marriage certificate, so they were married.  In the left margin on the first page, there is handwriting that seems to refer to his baptismal certificate with a church and the same date of birth mentioned.

shellyesq, as always, thank you for your help and comprehensive reply. The full copy of the marriage license and marriage cert is a wonderful historical document to 'get my hands on'.
Thanks again.
Paul.

You're welcome.

I'm surprised Bernard isn't on the Social Security death index given the time frame of his likely death, but there are some professions where they had their own pensions and didn't use Social Security.

His enlistment in the US Army seems to be here - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KMN6-R24?lang=en
