Have been looking at the newspapers, there are a couple of reports in the paper of a Mary Gadney buried 17 May 1832 and both articles say she was married to Joseph Gadney, fisherman. Haven't found another burial yet for 1832.

This has already been discussed a few threads previous to this.

Ref your reply 7.  There are numerous posts on Rootschat where children are registered in the man’s surname but the couple never married.

In doing so - one of 2 things can happen on the birth cert

The mother is shown as Susan Gadney nee Wells - giving the impression the couple are married

The mother is shown as Susan Wells

Do you have a copy of either of the first 2 children's birth certs?

Logic dictates that if they were married - why would she be referred to as Wells in relation to the assault charge in 1840?

Sadly I have neither certificates and cannot afford to get either of them. So I guess this will permantly be a big hole/gap on my tree.

You can buy a digital copy of the birth cert for Alfred for £3 but save your money.  Are you aware that Alfred married as Alfred Gadney Wells?

Interesting, could you please provide me the link to buy Alfred’s certificate for £3. The family story goes is that the surname became Gadney-Wells for a long time and then a big arguement broke out in the family over the surname at somepoint and some of them kept the Wells part and some didnt.

I would be interested in getting a copy of Alfred’s birth certificate as he is Joseph’s son and my 3 x great grandfather.

Here is the link.  If you have never bought a cert online before you have to register which is free.

Make sure you select digital copy when ordering.  Do not select pdf

No.  I bought all certs I needed years ago.  You get all info that you would get if you paid the full price but without the coloured paper etc etc
