Ref your reply 7.  There are numerous posts on Rootschat where children are registered in the man’s surname but the couple never married.

In doing so - one of 2 things can happen on the birth cert

The mother is shown as Susan Gadney nee Wells - giving the impression the couple are married

The mother is shown as Susan Wells

Do you have a copy of either of the first 2 children's birth certs?

Logic dictates that if they were married - why would she be referred to as Wells in relation to the assault charge in 1840?

I now have invested in the two childrens birth certificates. I couldnt get the first childs because although I can find the GRO entry on Ancestry when I try and find it on the GRO on the government website to order a copy I cannot find it. So that ones a dud im afraid. I do have their second child Alfred’s birth certificate however.

As you can see Susan is listed as “Susannah Gadney Nee Wells”

I believe Susanna might be this entry. Heyford fits for the birth location. The year is roughly about right.

Susanna Wells
Baptism Date: 2 Oct 1814
Baptism Place: Lower Heyford
Parish as it Appears: Lower Heyford
Father: Thomas Wells
Mother: Sarah Wells

On Susan’s death certificate. She is listed as being 79 years old. If you minus her age with the year of her death you get 1815. Only one year off 1814. Perhaps this could be her?

There are known to be entries missing from the GRO index, which you can report from the foot of the search page.  Your reason for believing it to be missing would be that it is in Ancestry.  Have you checked FreeBMD as well?

Yes I have tried both FreeBMD and Ancestry and the birth is on both of those just not the GRO itself. I will have to report it I suppose

Reply #23 "How do I report it? I cannot find it on my phone"

For your future information.  You only see this after you have some results or "No matching results found".  Below that you will see:

"Noticed a problem with a record in the GRO Indexes?  You can report it to GRO and help us improve the quality of information available."
