Thomas OWEN, baptised in Acton, 1720s
« on: Monday 30 June 25 12:45 BST (UK) »
Hello,

My 5th great-grandfather was Thomas OWEN, baptised in Acton, Cheshire, son of Thomas and Mary OWEN, 5th January 1750.

However, I’m hesitating over his possible father - Thomas OWEN, again baptised in Acton, 14th August 1720 – father given as John OWIN.

On ‘Family Search’, this Thomas OWEN seems to be paired with a Martha Poynton, not a Mary, and moved to Barthomley, near Crewe (which I find unlikely).

Obviously, there is a disagreement somewhere, but I can find no other Thomas OWEN born in the Acton/Bunbury area at around the same time.

Can anybody help?

Thank you.

From Family search site

Name   Thomas Owen
Father's Name   Thomas Owen
Mother's Name   Mary

Event Type   Christening
Event Date   5 Jan 1750
Event Place   Acton, Cheshire, England

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:J7QX-GZY?lang=en

Maybe not have MMN but it does state MARY not Martha which seems to match the above marriage details and fits the time scale  ;) Just my opinion of cause  ??? ???

Big Edit
On a follow up to above there appears to at least one other Thomas Owens marrying a Mary in and around Cheshire between 1744 and 1745 so a good chance some if not all the above maybe not related to one couple but a mix up of both. Sorry If I'd added to the confusion  :'( :'(

Hello.

Thank you!

(Confusion … yes … but I think I can unpick it.)

I’m now pretty convinced that Thomas Owen (Acton 1720) was my sixth great-grandfather. I accept that it was the same person who died in Acton in 1801 (Thank you – a detail I did not have).

It’s the marriage that I’m not so sure about.

Yes, Mary fits nicely, but looking a little closer, Mary Bate was from Frodsham, which is 18 miles north of Acton. (On the Register, it has Thomas Owen as coming from the ‘same parish’.)

Looking closer still, we see that the Thomas Owen she married (1745) was actually from Netherton – not Acton. Netherton was a small village bordering Frodsham – hence, the ‘same parish’.

Thus is the problem…

My Thomas was born in Acton and died there. His son, Thomas, (and, no doubt, other children) was baptised there in 1750. His family descendants stayed In Acton until beyond 1900.

Therefore, I cannot see how Thomas Owen from Acton, and Thomas Owen from Netherton are one and the same person - despite what a number of 'trees' seem to have decided.

I think we’re looking for someone much closer to home.
