Ann Brake Walden, married at St Germans 1843
« on: Saturday 28 June 25 16:44 BST (UK) »
The marriage of Dr Robert Delafosse Shield and Ann Brake Walden was registered in St Germans district in the 4th quarter of 1843.  She had a daughter born and baptized in 1844 in Rochester, Kent, which is where Robert's parents were apparently living at the time.

After giving birth to a son at Clun, Shropshire (where Robert was a GP) in 1846 she died there on 8 Dec. 1847 and was buried there on the 11th, her age given as 32.

If that age is correct, we can expect her to have been born in 1815.  There were several named Ann Walden born or baptized about that time, but none with the middle name Brake.  I'm assuming it was a second forename and not part of her surname.  And none of them was anywhere near St Germans or Saltash.  I don't know why Robert would have been there in 1843, unless specifically for his wedding, something that usually takes place near the bride's home.

Can anyone help me find out who her parents were and perhaps a more precise date of birth (or baptism) ?

Is there a fathers name on the marriage cert?

Have you found her on the 1841 census?  Does it show her as born in county?

Have you checked Family Search?

Have you looked for a Brake/Walden marriage?  She may have been born illegitimate

Thank you for your swift response, Carole.

I confess I have not seen the marriage certificate.  I have over a thousand relatives in my tree: it would break the bank to obtain certificates for every birth, marriage, and death (and she's not one of my closer relatives).

I failed to find her in the 1841 census.

I have certainly tried FamilySearch.  I did look for a possible Brake/Walden marrriage after civil registration began, but not (yet) in earlier years.

I think there would have been newspaper announcements of her marriage and death,
but I don't currently have a subscription to the British Library newspaper archive.

That looks promising, though if Thomasin and Tamzin are the same person she must have been very young when she married.
