Maddison Grey, father of Margery Gray, bapt Stanhope 09 Feb 1679
« on: Friday 27 June 25 20:45 BST (UK) »
Was this Maddison Grey, father of the Margery Grey, bapt Stanhope 09 Feb 1679, the same person who was baptized in Stanhope, 07 Feb 1622? He would have been at the advanced age of 57, so it raises the possibility that the father of Margery was a younger Maddison Gray, perhaps the son of the person baptized in 1622.

I don't see any parish records in this time period for any other Maddison Gray.

Note that Margery Grey was the youngest of at least 8 children born to a Maddison Grey in Stanhope from 1663-1679. Also note that the Grey surname was alternately spelled Gray.

There is a burial record in Stanhope in the year 1700 for a Maddison Gray, no age given.

Yes, that's the christening. I think this Grey/Gray line could lead to something interesting but first I want to make sure I haven't skipped a generation or made any other faulty assumption.

Hi there! I was looking into the Grey/Gray family a few weeks ago (distant defendant). Was only able to reach up to Maddison’s grandfather Ralph before finding conflicting records or not finding anything, edits to FamilySearch that didn’t make sense and were unsourced, etc. There’s a fair few trees on Ancestry which could potentially have records attached?

It’s alleged - but I’m yet to find proof - that this line links to nobles in Northumberland. Best of luck with your search!
England: Clark (Cumberland), Davies (Shropshire), Grey (Northumberland), Hetherington (Northumberland), Hoverd (Oxfordshire), McKnight (Cumberland), McPherson (Northumberland), Robinson (Northumberland)
Scotland: Horn (Midlothian, 1600s)

What evidence is their to connect Maddison to Ralph Gray? All I've seen are online trees without anything solid to back up the claim. I'd welcome any good data you have that connects them. Thanks.

Christening records mostly. It’s a weak link but the best I’ve been able to find from this era in the absence of wills. Maddison’s 1622 Christening lists his father as Matthew Grey, and there was a Geneanet tree (have since lost the link, apologies) linking Matthew to a Ralph (may have been a will)

To be fair, I only have noted that Matthew’s father was a man named Ralph: nothing on this Ralph himself.
England: Clark (Cumberland), Davies (Shropshire), Grey (Northumberland), Hetherington (Northumberland), Hoverd (Oxfordshire), McKnight (Cumberland), McPherson (Northumberland), Robinson (Northumberland)
Scotland: Horn (Midlothian, 1600s)

Ok thanks. Yeah I've seen that Geneanet claim. Looks like wishful thinking, but maybe someone will come forward with some solid evidence.
