Thomas Morgan born Dawley Magna, Shropshire 1808 or 1809
« on: Monday 23 June 25 03:53 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am looking to find the parents of Thomas Morgan who was born in Dawley Magna, Shropshire in 1808 or  29 Jan 1809.  He married Mary Ann Tonks in 1832 and emmigrated to New Zealand in 1841.  There are records of them having children in Biliston. Many thanks Raymond

Thomas  s/o Thomas and Ann Morgan was baptised at Dawley Magna 29 January 1809.

There is a marriage of Thomas Morgan bachelor and Ann Morgan spinster at Madeley 11 April 1803. Thomas signs. Ann makes her mark.  Witnesses are John Buckley and Margaret Buckley.

There are no other marriages of a Thomas Morgan and an Ann around this time in Shropshire.  However there is one in Wolverhampton  21 March 1808 of Thomas Morgan  bachelor and Ann Jackson spinster. Witnesses are John Sparrow and Joseph Wainwright.

Thank you very much for the additional information - most helpful too.  The NZ records have Thomas Morgan listed as a bricklayer, but you have mentioned is occupation as a miner.  They had emmigrated  to NZ in 1841 on the 'Birman'.

I have found a record in the Shropshire archives 5 June 1824 a settlement examination for poor; this is of the family of Thomas and Ann (married in 1808?) I am presuming, parents of the Thomas Morgan who  married Mary Ann Tonks.  They were 'moved' from Bishop's Castle to Castle Caereinion Montgomeryshire.  Have requested a copy of the fiche document.

I think the 1803 marriage between Thomas Morgan and Ann Morgan might fit best.
Madeley is just 2 miles from Dawley Magna.

(Unfortunately I am only finding transcriptions and not images of originals to view.)

Baptisms in Dawley Magna - children of Thomas and Ann
Mary Morgan 1803
John Morgan 1807
George Morgan 1807 (burial 1821)
Thomas Morgan 1809
William Morgan 1812
Sarah Morgan 1816
Samuel Morgan 1819

In the 1841 census there is a James Morgan living with Thomas and family. He is possibly a brother, but I didn’t see a baptism for him.

Re originals, the baptisms 1803 - 1812 add nothing to the transcript
The 1816 and 1819 baptisms include "Abode - Old Park" and "Father's occupation - Collier".

U tube has a film of Old Park and Dark Lane near Dawley

Thank you.  I watched the video and it's quite enlightening. I had no idea that the Dawley was close to the centre of the industrial revolution and the original Iron Bridge.  Now I need to find out where Thomas Morgan senior was born but I suspect that was somewhere near Bishop's Castle in Montgomeryshire.
