Ships passenger lists
« on: Sunday 22 June 25 18:13 BST (UK) »
Since FindMyPast released some new passenger lists last week, I have been having a lovely time filling in some gaps for a family I am working on, but I have a couple of queries. I have an eight year old boy listed alone - would he have had a companion listed in a different class? (I think I have worked this one out! It is an alphabetical list, so his nurse/companion would be entered separately.)

10 years later, in 1935, the same boy is listed travelling to Columbo, R.N. for the East India station, but the entry is crossed through. Should I assume he did not travel?

Some reasons for the strike through on the list.

*Failure to board.

*Passenger has disembarked before the final destination for the voyage. That is at a port along the route. so struck through as not continuing

*Put on a different list for the same voyage. For instance listed with his family and then again with men

Depending on the detail of the manifest you are looking at, further search of the whole document might help clarify.

Regarding the child listed alone aged 8 years.
Who with might depend on what degree of information the manifest contains about each person.

If there are ticket numbers search for consecutive numbers regardless of names.

If there are addresses of intended residency or past residency, look for matches.

Thank you for the reply - lots to think about. I know that when he travelled as an 8 year old, he was going to relatives. I expect it was boarding school after that - poor child.
