WALTER MAJOR died on 8 April 1920 after serving with the South African Infantry. Aged about 37.
Walter lived at Brewer Street in London and died in St George's Hospital. His family roots however were in Scarborough
Walter was the son of Henry Cornelius and Mary Jane Major. Henry (born in London) was a gilder in the picture framing industry and it would appear that Walter followed him into that profession. His mother , Mary Jane (born in Scarborough) died at some date between 1901 and 1911. In 1901 the family consisted of father, mother, Walter and 4 siblings - Maria, James Arthur, Rose and Edward.
Walter's service records lists a brother A J Major of 35 Wellington Road, Bridlington as next of kin. (was this the James Arthur listed in 1901 with names reversed?)
Big question- might Walter's body have been brought home to Scarborough for burial among his family? He is entitled to War Grave status - if proof of burial can be established.
Any help would be gratefully received.
