John Moulton and Ann Bride
« on: Today at 04:54 »
Hello,

I have drawn a blank on my second great-grandfather John Moulton of Nantwich Cheshire.

I know that he married Martha Hope on the 13th of September 1857 and that they had five children.

However I can’t find anywhere his date of birth or his parentage.

It seems that he died before 1870, because Martha appears to have remarried in September1872  (Thomas Sumner).

I have also drawn a blank on Martha’s mother, Ann Bride, who was apparently born in Dublin around 1801 (gauging the date from Nantwich census records). I would like to know more about her Irish heritage.

Can anyone help?

Thank you.

Thank you.

If they were married in 1857, the marriage certificate should show the names of the bride and groom's fathers.
It should also show their ages and occupations, and their fathers' occupations.
All of which should help to try and trace them.
Have you got this?

What age and places of birth do they give on the Censuses you have looked at?

Cochran, Nicol, Paton, Bruce:Scotland. Bertolle:London

Their marriage certificate is free to view on familysearch.org.
This was not difficult to find.

Unfortunately it just says 'of full age', but you should have some ides of when he was born from the Censuses.
Both make their mark.

His father is given as George Moulton, a butcher.
Martha Hope's father is given as William Hope labourer.

Added
There's a baptism of a John Moulton July 20th 1828 at Church Minshull, about 5 miles south.
Parents George and ELizabeth.
Plus several other children.
Once again, you can view these baptism registers on familysearch.org.

George Moulton married Elizabeth Jackson 28th May 1817 Acton by Nantwich.
Again viewable on familysearch.
Both make their mark.
Occupations were not included in marriage registers at this time, or the names of parents.
Interestingly a John Moulton is one of the witnesses - perhaps he was George's brother.

Dear Goldie61,

Thank you very much, these details are really helpful.

However, on Family search, I can find Parish Registers and Marriage Banns, but no (very useful) certificates – so thank you for those (I know I must be doing something wrong. ::))

Anyway, if you can find any Irish-side data on Ann Bride, that would be fantastic!

Thank you again,

Neil

The image for John's marriage is available on Findmypast and Ancestry.

George and Elizabeth are on the 1841 census, but John is not with them. There are possibles lodging elsewhere

The image for the marriage of George Moulton and Elizabeth Jackson is also available.

George, a widower, married again on 11th November 1847 to Hannah Bate. That image is also on Findmypast, and they appear on the 1851-61 censuses. However, he was an agricultural labourer, not a butcher.

George's father was Samuel, and there is a baptism on 30th July 1797 in Acton (Near Nantwich), son of Samuel and Mary of Pool.

Martha Hope in at Marsh Lane, Nantwich, in 1841. Her baptism, on 12th March 1832 is also available, as is her parents' marriage in 1831.

The only Ann Bride baptism I can find was on 14th December 1810 in Cork, daughter of Robert Hope and Mary Barry.
