WW2 request for Geordie man
« on: Friday 20 June 25 19:08 BST (UK) »
Good evening,

As a member of the Royal Air Forces Association in Newcastle, received the following request

I have a French friend in Dunkirk whose grandfather saved an airman from Newcastle near the end of the war. They are putting a plaque at the site and want members of the family if possible to be present. His name was Andrew Evans married lived at 101 farthing avenue walker on Newcastle if that makes sense.. i have a number of other pictures i can send next week as on holiday at the moment.. Any help appreciated.

Chris balderston

Searching I found it is IRTHING avenue in Walker, and he lived there a 1937 with wife Vera Evans, nee Christer and a son David born 1938 - no other siblings found to date, so asking for your kind help and trying to find living members of Andrew's family this can be passed to. Requested if any photos can be forwarded.

Grateful for assistance, Thank you

Bill Houston

Hello again,

Happy to agree with the son David and his family. Passing what is there to this man. but he's also asked me to get in touch with a person from Newcastle Council, Armed Forces Champion plus a person from the Chronicle newspaper who's very interested in doing an article on this. Was also given photos etc regarding Mr Evans - short biop. - was in a Halifax aircraft which was shot down over France, he baled out, injured on way down and was rescued then with 2 others transported back to England - awarded a Military Medal in 1942- 1 crew member died and 1 was taken prisoner.

I will let the Councillor and newsperson take this further, but have also mentioned you as a great source of information - how to mention the source as Ladyhawk!! , keep you advised as to what they do .

Thanks again

Bill

Hello, hope you are well, letting you know, thanks to your efforts 2 families have been connected.  the son, David, is well and at the address last known, so was delighted to learn about the French search for him and sibling.
I have asked to also be kept in the loop regarding proposed visit etc. and learnt there is an article in the Chronicle Newspaper  and online put up on 1st July - happened to be mentioned to me much later as we are referenced in it.
Nice when your efforts are successful, Bill
