Searching a specific address in a Scottish Census
« on: Wednesday 18 June 25 14:08 BST (UK) »
How do I look up a specific address in a Scottish census?

I know how to look for a specific person via scotlandspeople website but if I want to know who was living at a specific address in a certain census year, how would I go about this?

For example, I have an ancestor who worked at Flowerburn House (Parish of Rosemarkie) in 1891.  Assuming I don't know his name but know he was the coachman at this house, is there a way to search for the residents of Flowerburn and its cottages etc in the 1891 census?

Thanks,
Bella

If you know the street name, or if you are prepared to go through a few household listings, you could use the F M P address search  :-\

I think it's Flowerburn Cottage, Academy Street - maybe a  Will **

Add  ** his surname

The valuation rolls (on Scotlands People) can be useful for looking at who was residing where at a specific point in time. Depends on who and what information you are looking for.
Milligan - Jardine – Glencross – Dinwoodie - Brown: (Dumfriesshire & Kirkcudbrightshire)
Clark – Faulds – Cuthbertson – Bryson – Wilson: (Ayrshire & Renfrewshire)
Neale – Cater – Kinder - Harrison: (Warwickshire & Queensland)
Roberts - Spry: (Cornwall, Middlesex & Queensland)
Munster: (Schleswig-Holstein & Queensland) and Plate: (Braunschweig, Neubruck & Queensland & New York)

Valuation Rolls have different date sequence than censuses - eg . 1895, 1905,

Also it lists only those who pay 'rates' .

Thank you Gadget - plenty of suggestions for me to follow up on.  Much appreciated.

I think my ancestor was in the Coachman's cottage which wasn't in Fortrose itself so I'll take a look tomorrow to see whether I can find the cottage via Findmypast or via the Valuation Rolls on ScotlandsPeople.

Look for him under Academy Street , then Flowerburn Cottage.

However, you can find him in the  1891 census in SP now by using his surname (Will) and/or  the ref 080/ 1/ 22

(no obvious sign of him on the 1885, 1895 or 1905 Rolls)
