Which Thomas Burley and Elizabeth??? Countesthorpe
« on: Tuesday 17 June 25 13:44 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

I am in a bit of a muddle and wondered if anyone could help me figure this out.

My ancestor Mary Burley was baptised in Countesthorpe, Leicestershire in 1818. The baptism lists her parents as Thomas Burley FWK and Elizabeth.

My issue is that there are two set of Thomas Burley and Elizabeth in Countesthorpe in the same period.

Thomas Burley (Widower) marrying Elizabeth Smeeton March 1812 in Countesthorpe.

Thomas Burley (Batchelor) marrying Elizabeth Morton (Horton/Norton?) March 1813 in Countesthorpe.

There are a string of Burley children in the parish records for Countesthorpe 1813-1828 born to Thomas Burley and Elizabeth - no maiden name given.

One child in particular is David Smeeton Burley so I think it is safe to assume he belongs to the Burley/Smeeton pairing. But what about the others? And most importantly my Mary?

I am struggling to track either family group in the census. I am not sure who Thomas Burley (Widower) was married to originally.

Can anyone help me untangle this?

Many Thanks

Have you found them on the 1841 census?

Brilliant Thank you.

I am assuming the David on the census is David Smeeton Burley. So it appears the 2 census entries are for the Burley/ Smeeton couple.

I can't find the other Burley/Morton family in Countesthorpe  on the census, can you?

These are the children I have identified as being born to Thomas Burley and "Elizabeth" but it is  unclear which belong to Burley/Smeeton and whether some are Burley/Morton.

Joseph (unclear middle name) Burley Bap June 1812
Mary Burley Bap June 1813
James Burley Bap Nov 1813
Henry Burley Bap Oct 1815
Mary Burley Bap Feb 1818
Josiah Burley Bap Dec 1820 Died May 1821
David Smeeton Burley Bap Sept 1822
Elizabeth Burley Bap March 1825
Ann Burley Bap 1828
Thomas Burley Bap April 1832
Josh Burley Bap July 1837

My thoughts at present...

Burley/ Smeeton Children

Joseph 1812 - Morton marriage wasn't until 1813, baptised as Burley nothing to suggest illegitimate.
James Burley Bap Nov 1813 - Assuming his siblings Thomas and Ann on 1851 census are the same Thomas and Ann on the 1841 with sibling David Smeeton Burley.
David Smeeton Burley Bap Sept 1822 - Middle name links to Smeeton Couple
Elizabeth Burley Bap March 1825 - On 1841 census with David Smeeton Burley
Ann Burley Bap 1828 - On 1841 census with David Smeeton Burley
Thomas Burley Bap April 1832 - On 1841 census with David Smeeton Burley
Josh Burley Bap July 1837 - Wondering if this is a transcription error and this is Joseph from the 1841 census.

I am unclear on the others. ???

The image for the baptism of Josh ? Burley 2 July 1837 is on FindMyPast.

It has Jos with an h written above and to the right of the s, so it could be Josiah or Joseph.

There is a Thomas Burley death 1825, buried 15 June age 27 - married man born circa 1798.

he is a bit young to be the other Thomas Burley unless they got his age wrong.
