Duncan MACKAY 1864-??
« on: Tuesday 17 June 25 09:06 BST (UK) »
Duncan was born c1864, being aged 26 in his Intention to marry Annie Alicia RICHARDS in 1891. They were married in Feilding on 20 Jan 1891.

Can find them in electoral rolls together in Rangitikei, Wellington, Masterton and Dannevirke up to 1911. In 1914 I think Annie is in Te Kuiti, no sign of Duncan. They divorced in 1917. Annie is still in Te Kuiti in 1919.

Had four children
Frederick Duncan 1891-1952
Flora 1893-1940
Bernice Alicia 1895-1963
Agnes Rititi 1897-1982

Annie went on to marry Joseph Christopher SPINLEY in Auckland in 1919, and died in Auckland in 1936.

Duncan was a blacksmith. He was adjudged bankrupt in 1893-96.

Not looking for anything further on Annie or the children, but hoping someone can assist in finding what happened to Duncan.

Thanks
Ian C

Hi Ian

Duncan makes an appearance in the NZ Police Gazette lastly in 1920 :
Waikeria (Prison ?) - Tried at Te Awamutu on 20/05/1920 - breach of probationary licence and false pretences.
[Prior :   1919 - tried at Wellington 21/06/1919 - sentence > 1 years reformative detention.  Plus 1906 - Napier Court - 4 month sentence for false pretences. ]
Thereafter   ???

Thanks Lu.

Like the way the Truth article was written.

Looks like he was a bit of a bad boy and has probably changed his name or left the country.

Hi Ian

Oh to have been a journo at "Truth" ... where such freedom of expression was encouraged !   ;D

Just spotted this (- surname misspelled) > maybe tracking down his family might "flush him out" ??
Death notices / "trees" online / probate files / all the  usual  ...  ;)

Hi again Ian

If you care to chase up on wider family of Duncan MACKAY (namely his siblings), then the following Probate file for his late father also named Duncan MACKAY, (d. 1910), may assist.  ;D

There's only 152 pages to read through !!!     ::)

https://ndhadeliver.natlib.govt.nz/delivery/DeliveryManagerServlet?dps_pid=IE63311309

You'll note that this file bears the name "Duncan McKAY" however the misspelling of same is clarified within the documentation attached.

Seriously though, no real need to read through all 152 pages (correspondence is only up until 1914).
I've scrolled through whole thing, but info helpful in order to trace the siblings, is largely given in the  earliest pages.

I made some notes as I scrolled through - will add these in following post.

Duncan MacKAY - died 1910 (father of Duncan MacKAY junior bc 1864) :

Notes (mine) taken from (very lengthy Probate file) :

*   Duncan MacKAY names the following children in his Will  (dated 1905 plus codicil)> and in some correspondence on file, confirms their placement in the family.

- Duncan MacKAY - eldest son
- Donald John MacKAY - second son (named as an executor of his father's will)
- William Gordon MacKAY - third son
- Daniel MacKAY (pre-deceased his father.  Statement on file from Daniel's widow  Caroline Sarah MacKAY, naming her four children (all sons)
- Annie Flora ROBINSON - daughter :   (Mrs ROBINSON is described as residing in NSW, AUS. - clarified later as being resident in Marrickville, NSW.)

*   Duncan MacKAY, the father,  held the licence for the Tarawera Hot Springs Hotel.  He died at that place on 29 November 1910.  Seems also to have had land holdings in Hunterville ?
The estate of Duncan MacKAY came into question in 1911 (a Court report exists at PapersPast).
His son Duncan MacKAY (bc 1864) along with his siblings, was a signatory in the process of obtaining probate.
Mary MacKAY - widow of Duncan MacKAY the father, was his second wife.   There was no issue of that marriage.
NZ Death index :  1910 - MACKAY - Duncan - 70 years   (bc 1840)

Last address (in Probate file) for Duncan MacKAY (bc. 1864) was care of a firm of solicitors in Napier around 1913.

Thanks Lu

Certainly a lot of reading there. Lot of repeated stuff though.

The daughter went to Australia and one of the nephews as well from a tree on Ancestry so Duncan probably went there as well. No mention of Duncan in most of the trees.

Found Duncan seniors death cert, and according to that he was born in Adelaide, and married there as well. Wife was Flora Kennedy. Father Donald but no mention of mother.

Also found Duncan juniors birth cert. Born 14 July 1864 in Dunedin. Lots of people arrived in Dunedin about this time from Australia.

Duncan had a brother William Gordon born in Oamaru in 1869, who seems to have disappeared as well. There was another William Gordon MACKAY of a similar age who married in 1891 and had children after that, but he was born in Adelaide, so could have been a relation as well somewhere.
