Agnes Patrick nee Thomson, Kilsyth
« on: Monday 16 June 25 03:24 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone could help me with an ancestor
I'm struggling to find records for, her name is Agnes Thomson
and I cannot find a baptism or birth certificate for her or her sister
Jean who is in the 1841 census, I also can’t find her sisters death record.

On Agnes’ death record her parents are marked as:
Robert Thomson (Cotton Weaver) (Deceased)
Jean Stevenson (Deceased)

I can’t find anything that lines up with these names in Kilsyth
but there is a James Thomson and Jean Stevenson Married
in 1807 in Kilsyth could Robert be a mistake in the death record?

This couple had 5 children in Kilsyth; Robert (1808) James (1810)
James (1811) William (1815) and Jean (1817)
Note: A Jean shows up here but no Agnes, Robert is also their first sons name.

The mother of these children Jean Thomson (MS: Stevenson) died
in Kilsyth aged 78 in 1886, as a widow of James Thomson (Cotton Weaver)
Parents: James Stevenson (Cotton Weaver) & Jean Finlay
Signed by her son William.

Here’s the records I have below:

My x3 Great Grandmother

Birth 1823?
Born Kilsyth on all census records

Census 1841

Census 1861

Of interest, next door on same census:

Alexander Thomson (Son)

Census 1871
Agnes Thomson or Patrick 51 (Widow, Tambourer)
James Patrick 24

Census 1891

Death 1899

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Death certificates are the least reliable of sources, because the information on it depends on the memory and accuracy of the informant. So yes, the name Robert could be an error.

You have the address of the family in the 1841 census. How does this compare with any address mentioned on the marriage banns for Agnes, and any of the baptismal records available? Are there any witness names on the marriage banns that you can cross reference?

I see in 1851, the mother Jean Thomson has her brother and niece with her.

Have you looked at the 1866 death cert for Jean Stevenson / Thomson ?
What does it say? Who was the informant?

Have you looked through the Kilsyth kirk sessions in the relevant time period to see if there is mention  of a Thomson or Stevenson child being born out of wedlock?

Thank you all for the speedy responses.

Neale1961: Unfortunately all of the records above don't give much more information that what I have listed. The marriage record I have does not list any witnesses or sponsors sadly, here is it in full:

Patrick & Thomson - October 4th John Patrick and Agnes Thomson both residing in this parish have given their names in order to proclamation of Banns 3 Sabbath.

Thanks for finding her mother in 1851, I hadn't come across that. Good to know there's a brother and niece to research too now.

The 1866 death cert for Jean Stevenson / Thomson has this information:

Jean Thomson (Pauper)
Widow of James Stevenson (Cotton Weaver)
2 Mar 1866, Old Town Kilsyth Age: 78
Parents: James Stevenson (Cotton Weaver) & Jean Stevenson (MS: Finlay)
Signed: William Thomson (Son)

I've had a search for these parents but also struggling to find anything for them in Old Parish Marriages or Deaths

I haven't searched the Kilsyth kirk sessions as they are only accessible through FamilySearch affiliate libraries, I'm planning another visit soon once I've collected enough to search on a few family members.

Kirk sessions are available on Scotlands People at no cost.
